Haven't really been keeping up on RPGs lately, I played DQ8 but couldn't get into it.

DQ9, much like Ninja Gaiden DS, is the more the exception than the rule though. Most 3d DS games look rather ugly, especially when compared to PSP games.

Definitely. It's actually a fair assessment of the DS to say 3D sucks, because by default developers thus far have made it suck. It's the same with Wii -- the system is an amazing SD beast, but few people are taking advantage of it (yet...).

Well of course, but the PSP is pretty much a portable PS2. It SHOULD have good 3D graphics.

I really wish developers stuck to 2d on the DS. It looks so damn good. Or at least, do some sort of pseudo 2d/3d hybrid ala Ouendan, where the horrible 3d meshes with the 2d sprites so you don't notice it.

Too many people seem to think that 2d is dead, and that 3d should reign supreme. I hope Odin Sphere enlightens a few folks.

My problems with the abandonment of 2D aren't just due to the fact that I love the way 2D looks, but rather we lose a lot of what made video games so addicting and challenging over a decade ago: pixel-perfect controls, obviously begetting obstacles that require precise navigation. Remember those annoying jumps that necessitated a perfect leap at the very edge of a cliff? Not possible in 3D. There is almost no such thing as a perfect jump in 3D platformers: you can hardly tell where your character would fall into the gorge, not to mention the fact that it's difficult to design a level around the fact that the player has 3 vectors of movement and acceleration.

...

It's late.

Definately agree with you too. I think Sonic 360/ps3 was an attempt at making that sort of platformer. We all know how that went.

Turok tried something similar back in the day too. The original game was half fps/half platformer. Certainly a weird combination.

We'll probably be seeing the death of 2d soon enough though. Nintendo's next handheld will be the final nail in the coffin. It shall be a sad day indeed.

You won't see the death of 2D as long as the japanese make games.

I've managed to convince myself that we'll continue to see 2D games on handhelds for a long time, especially with Nintendo still dominating the scene (thank god PSP didn't take over, what a ghetto we'd be in right now). I wouldn't be surprised to see the DS sequel be less powerful than a PSP. Is that what I want? Hard to say. I definitely do not like Sony's "console on a portable" take on the market.

XBL Arcade and PSN should also provide good avenues for 2D games to flourish. I'd add Wii downloadable content too, but Nintendo's online service is borderline trisomy-21.

I don't doubt that Japanese devs will continue to make 2D stuff, but, how much of it will actually make it over to NA/EU?

I have to disagree here. Most PSN/XBLA games coming out nowadays are 3d titles. Games such as Undertow are also proof that 3d games can look pretty damn good good through the download services [even though Undertow is a fairly bad example gameplay wise -- it's gameplay mechanics seem to be firmly grounded in the world of 2d]. If Allegorithmic pull off what they're promising, texture size and download limitations won't hold back downloadable games any more.

I personally wish that developers would have stuck to 2D in most games (some generes, obviously not). 2D always had a lot more character.

Kinda proud to be part of the 2D era.

Eh, I have no problem judging distances/jumps in Ratchet & Clank, Jak series etc. God of War pretty much has perfect control as well(and you can't even move the camera around in it). It's not 3D that's a problem. It's shitty developers you have a problem with.
