| Good stuff. If I buy war dogs instead of normal dogs will the war dogs still breed? Even if I put them in cages early on? I can stop buying cats and just buy more war dogs. What is this about cages? How do you put a dog in there? It's probably easy I'll give it a look when I get home. Do I need to do anything to take care of the animals after putting them in a cage? I'd probably skip swimming 5 and architecture I thought only needed 1 since increases only speed up its construction speed and it's not like its used for anything regularly I don't think?Do you build an animal training design early on? Oh here's another question How do I check what weapons I have in stock? If I had bought a bunch of stuff for a caravan and forgot it might make it easier if I could just go see what I had then assign it to dwarves. Also do you have to assign individual weapon racks to your military or can you put a bunch in a barracks and they will take one automatically? I absolutely hate having to go to each individual bedroom and make it a bedroom before a dwarf will automatically sleep in it and make it his.. and even then not all the time...*nitpick* Oh and I could probably start without the anvil now that I think about it. It doesn't get used till MUCH later after the first caravan if not longer but the axe is cheaper and would be used immediately. I could easily buy the anvil later when I have tons of money and I usually do have tons to sell by the second caravan..

+41 Internets | BTW needless to say, I hope the creators(s) get picked up by a good studio to make a full on version of this game. The same gameplay, depth, etc. but polished, with a new GUI and everything and this game would make millions. Once again, proof that gameplay trumps graphics |

| @ Sharmai 1) War Dogs War dogs still breed. But no animals breed in cages, thats why you put all cats in there. If you want them not to run around AND breed, you have to use restraints (ropes). I'd start with one cat (vs vermin!) and then try to keep the cat population from growing by killing any new ones. Migrants will bring cats/kittens you cannot butcher anyway. 2) Cage Build a cage (build -> cage; like you deploy a bed) and then Q, move cursor over it and you can assign animals to the cage. I think there is no limit to how many animals can be in one cage. The one in my current bloodline game has about four dozen in there. They dont die, dont breed, etc in there. You can even deconstruct the cage and then sell it to a caravan. You basicly only need to put new animals in there and release the grown up ones you want to breed. 3) Architect You need architect skill ALOT. Or at least I do. Most buildings require an architect at some point. So either the mason building your bridge will do the design himself or you have multiple dwarves running there. 4) Animal Training As I love breeding war dogs, I build kennels in the first or second year and have my mayor (leaderdwarf) do it in his spare time. Later on the dungeon master will do it. All you really need is kennels (5x5) and 1 tile for a cage near it. For breeding of other animals and "storing" wardogs you dont want to assign yet, you need a bigger room with lots of restraints. And put butcher/tanner right next to it. If you are cool, make some floor grates / bars and put water below it. The butched animals will make the water into blood and you can have a bloodfall instead of a waterfall in your fortress. Or you store it to drown your enemies in BLOOD. Go evil dorfs! 5) Stock Z => Stock There you can see all items you have. In order to get decent info, you need to make a random dwarf bookkeeper ([n]obles => [r]eplace) and set him ([n]obles => [s]ettings) on high or accurate. This dwarf will do nothing but keep your stock info updates. So best pick a peasant with no skills. 6) Weapon Racks Good Question. I just put a bunch of them in there, sometimes it seems to help against them throwing old stuff on the ground and sometimes it doesnt. Really no clue. 7) Bedrooms I dont assign bedrooms, beside noble quarters. Just make it a bedroom and let them pick the rooms themselves. If they want one, they can take it. Might be different if you have trouble keeping your dorfs happy, but mine just dont care. Quote:
I kinda like it more Quote:
Right now it is two persons working on the game. A guy that does everything and his brother that writes some stories for it but nothing else. He was a math professor / researcher (?) on some university and is now working only on dwarf fortress. So donate if you want him to be able to buy food! And I agree, 3D-Engine, good Interface... holy fuck that would ruin my life. Last edited by Inconsiderable; 03-23-2009 at 04:39 PM.. | ||

| Ok I am having a ton of trouble creating an outdoor fortified area for my archers to shoot down on goblins as they come through my maze trap area. I managed to create a map with some AWESOME features that I am loving. On the highest level is a plateau that is wide and sparsely placed with trees. It spans 60% of the map. I built my base up there by just digging down in the middle then putting some wardogs outside on restraints to prevent goblin ambushers from showing up. (They are GREAT at detecting pesky goblin would be thieves) Now my plan was to go around the outside edge of the map about 5 or 6 tiles in and build a massive wall so all that woodland and whatever else would be enclosed with me. Then eventually I would pave the land on the outer wall to make sure those caravans can still get in. I also want to make a maze area that my archers can climb up on and then fire down on the bad guys. The problem is whenever I build up stairs next to my constructed walls and then tell my military to patrol or station there they don't go up there. They will patrol or station fine on the ground below the wall and around it but not on it. I tried making at 3 wide wall with up stairs 4 wide on one of the sides but no luck. Any suggestions?

| It's on the top level of the plateau so the "floor" is all grass/tree land that I cut all the trees down from. All of the walls I am using are constructed walls since I am at the top of this plateau. The mountain does not reach to the highest level attainable though if that's what your thinking. It's about about 3 or so tiles above sea level. I think that's what you meant about floors? I didn't build any floors anywhere at all. I just build up stairs next to the walls and 3 tile wide max length constructed walls.

| Awesome awesome game, got myself a base next to a lava pit, so lava moat FTW :P I get kinda OCD so every fort has a massive stone stockpile dug into some soil, filled with whatever is cluttering my fort. I've never gotten past 100 guys though, when do the big sieges start showing up? Oh and one of my soldiers suffocated in bed, how the hell did that happen!? |

| Was he murdered? Is that possible? I'm not sure if that's even possible given how many things are possible in this game.. I do know that your sheriff and the fortress guard you assign with him will handles those kinds of things (like stealing) so maybe murder is possible to?
