Xbox failed in Japan because it was large, ugly, devoid of SquareEnix games, and came from America.

The 360 is doing horribly for the above reasons; primarily the last one. Japs are racist, hardcore.

Yes it's such a good comparison to compare Xbox360 to PS3/Wii when both consoles just came out 6 months ago. I own an Xbox360 and I think it's great, but I don't think that is in anyway a fair comparison. Too bad Super Smash Bros and Metroid Prime 3 are delayed until Sept and Oct respectively. At least hopefully Mario Party 8 will come out on time.

Yes Japanese are definitely hardcore racists and that contributes to Microsoft's failure in Japan.

In fact, since the Wiki numbers were from January. It's rougly 860k. About 150k short of what they claimed. Now add the sluggish feb/March/April numbers in and you'll get about 1.2 million-1.3 million. The Japanese numbers appear to be fairly legit from what I read so I won't question them and it's near fucking impossible to fine euro sales without paying for it through chart track or something. All I have to go on is what my euro buddies say and one of them owns a PS3. The only thing I do know is that in 3 weeks, PS3 sales went from 160k to 17k in the UK. From what I heard, it didn't do so hot in the rest of Europe post launch day (pretty much the same as US/Japan).

All that backtracking you did only validates what I posted. Thanks for doing my work for me. And what's this of a PS4 in 2008? Believing blatantly bogus rumors like this only to make the PS3 look bad is what made me call you a fanboy.

this is the dumbest excuse (usually by people in marketing) for why things fail in japan ever. they're not racist. it's that the japanese have a certain taste (generally) and usually can tell what a good product is. ipods are popular there. xbox360 failed because it's a shitty system (by shitty i mean in meeting the needs of japanese consumers). and yea, the memory of xbox1 certainly didn't help.

I love it how some FOH members think they are all that because they were hardcore raiders in EQ a few years ago but don't get hard because of your "supposed" rep from an MMOG. While the 1.1 million units sold looks pretty legit, a lot of people have failed to realize is HOW MANY OF THEM WERE RETURNED? Out of the 600 thousand units sold in December, how many of them were on EBay? How many of them did not sell and ultimately how many of them were returned?

I remeber there were a lot of people on this board saying how people were returning PS3 when they found out they are not profitable anymore. I don't doubt a few hundred thousand were returned in North America. I'm not sure how the NPD works, but if it only list sales then the number can be somewhat off. Also note the "need citation" for the total PS3 sales while Wii doesn't need one (because how many units shipped is how many units sold) so the 3.3 million is not a solid number.

For those of you talking about cheaper HDTV prices and more consumers making choices for a higher def system I call BS..

You are forgetting one very important factor. PRICE. Yes the 360 got a lowered price and is damn close to the Wii but average consumer (ED: The people who drive console sales) don't care about hi def or hdtv enabled systems etc.

Then go into the store and remeber that bob the neighbor said the Wii was fun. They remeber swinging that remote around during Wii Sports and it was fun. They do not care about x360 mass effect or halo 14. The average consumer will walk into ebgames and here what we have all been hearing for several months. "The Wii is FUN, family friendly, made for kids, and you can even get a workout!" "Psst. btw its also cheaper then the other two!!"

They won't even see the fact that its not that much cheaper then the x360.


PRICE people.. Price is what decided this generation. Not graphics, PRICE.

FFS this is the same argument we saw before the systems even launched. "PS3 can deliver 10,100,301 DPI!!!! Wii can't! With more HD being sold, people will buy the PS3 for the GAWD-LIKE RESOLUTION". That sure worked out...

Wii has already burst the "graphics are king" bubble that all the hardcore American (yes American, the Japanese market has traditionally been loads more forgiving on gfx) console d00ds have always touted as being the main selling force behind a system.

Xenophobia does play a factor, but the population at large ignores it if the product is good. See my previous post on the XB1 failure to get a better understanding. It was a number of various factors that all made for a poor first launch, which directly affected the 2nd.
