+16 Internets | I'm honestly beginning to think that this system is part of some enormous joke that will go off precisely on April 1st. Maybe when the clock strikes midnight every PS3 and PSP in the world will become sentient and usher in a new age for mankind, filled with gumdrops and magical happiness. That's really the only logical reasoning behind such complete and utter retardation. How can every single move that one company makes be so completely engulfed in human fecal matter? |

| Dropping the ball on backwards compatibility is a shame. Backwards compatibility is a HUGE selling point to the Wii (at least for me.) I've been cracking out GC games left and right waiting for good Wii titles to come to market. Honestly speaking, I'd have bought a PS3 were it 100% compatible with PS2 titles. Since it wasn't, I picked up a Silver Slim instead and probably won't go near the PS3 for at least a year (if ever.) |

| You guys are totally wrong. The prime commercial target of the ps3 are blue-ray player buyers. These types don't care for backwards compatibility. GOGOGO best game library a console ever had, down the drain you go! |

+38 Internets | Look at my title... this makes even me seriously consider cancelling my pre-order and demanding a full refund on the $200 deposit. Obviously it's not the advertised product. The thing that still bothers me is that I have no idea if I can play US games on a Euro PS3 (or xbox360, should I choose to go that way) - we euros got fucked with every PS2 game release that'd somehow took 6 months longer to translate to UK English than US English and the only way to get around it was importing the console from the US. No big deal with the PS2, but for some reason I don't feel comfortable doing it with this more expensive generation. Maybe because it's also likely to break - I didn't import the PS2 until it had been out for a while. Any word on that? I may relocate to NA within the lifespan of these consoles, so it's a rather important point =/ edit: Well, I've learned that games run, but movies don't - makes it somewhat of a tough call... | Few things. First of all, this is hardly unexpected. Sony have been saying this for so long now, and its obviously going to save them a lot of money on each console produced. The poor (?) compatability is incredibly disappointing though, as is the lack of funding that will go in to developing it further. Secondly, its incredibly naive to think that this only applies to Europe. Why would Sony the more expensive model, when they can put the cheaper model on the shelves with the majority of folks not noticing the difference? Finally, my PS2 will be staying plugged in to my tv for a while to come for one huge reason -- rumble. I despise the arrogance displayed by Sony when dealing with the Immersion tech patent lawsuits, with us, the games players, being the people who lose out. I have a backlog of 10+ ps2 games, with a few gems like God of War 2 still to be released. Unless Sony adds upscaling and aa/af to bc, there is no way I'll be putting those discs into my PS3. With the exception of [perhaps] Motorstorm, my PS3 is going to primarily function as a blu-ray player when it arrives next month. Fairly disappointing, but hopefully GDC will give the console the kickstart it needs. Edit - In regards to region locking -- I remember reading that PS3 content will be region free, but BC content will not. Additionally, Blu-ray discs in NA/JP are in a different region to EU, in case you were thinking about using it as a player. Second Edit - Just remembered -- you can only actually play online with the region that your console comes from. So, for example, Resistance running on a EU PS3 connects to the EU servers, but the US PS3 with the same disc connects to the US servers, regardless of your current location in the world. Meh. +16 Internets | Obviously this has to do with production costs, but I doubt it is a decision from SCEE, more like an afterthought from SCEI. SCEE probably still pays the same price per machine too, making Reeves the first guy to be royaly pissed off, especialy since he is the one who has to try and put some make up on that ugly piece of news. Note that if GC compatibility was important for the Wii since no one had a GC in the first place and it happens to have games worth playing (unlike the Wii), it's less critical in Europe were the PS2 is so strongly dominant. I am pretty sure 95% of PS3 buyers will 1) Have a PS2 2) Buy the PS3 as Blu Ray player / HD device and not care about crappy low rez PS2 games (they might be idiots, but that's another debate). A good piece of news would be a nice change though...
