What a fucking joke. This kind of shit is what makes people dislike Muslims.

Thinking about it from Sony's perspective, there's really no other way around it. They want this game to be accessible to everyone. I have a feeling their decision to recall the copies of the game is not so much because they're worried about offending the specific muslims who complained (or muslims in general), but because the translated lyrics are violent, and they're concerned with backlash from Arab-speaking customers who hear "EVERYONE SHALL HAVE A TASTE OF DEATH" playing in their poppy, family-friendly blockbuster game.

I'd rather have the game uncensored, unpatched, etc. but as far as Sony is thinking, they could face a lot of bad press because of this.

At some point it was said that users would be able to sell their levels if they were so inclined. What's the skinny on that?

As a general rule, the people I talk to have no problems with Muslims. The only time I hear people say nasty things about them is when Muslims attempt to make their religious rules apply to those who do not follow their faith and the story makes the news.

This statement can also be applied to any religious group. I was raised Catholic, but it still pisses me off when Catholics try to force their views on the rest of the country. They are entitled to their opinions, but it's unreasonable to go around thinking everyone else should play by their religion's rules.

Maybe I haven't been watching as much TV lately, but I haven't seen much advertising for this.

Yea, I haven't seen much of a marketing blitz either. There have been some really cool things popping up, like this mobile LBP Shop in the UK:

Though I suspect with a game that's attempting to be wide-reaching and not so much capture the hardcore crowd (who are already perfectly aware and probably made their decision by now on whether they want it or not), its much more important to have the advertising heavy AFTER release, where the average person who hasn't heard of it before can just drive down to the store and buy it.

Well before everyone starts making these assumptions about Muslims, saw this article today:

Quote:
The non-profit American Islamic Forum For Democracy has spoken out against Sony's decision to recall LittleBigPlanet, calling the move "censorship".

M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D, director of the AIFD, said that, “Muslims cannot benefit from freedom of expression and religion and then turn around and ask that anytime their sensibilities are offended that the freedom of others be restricted."

Jasser added that the Prophet, "defended the rights of his enemies to critique him in any way even if it was offensive to his own Islamic sensibilities or respect for Koranic scripture.”

Not that he is calling Sony an enemy of Islam or anything but.. well, you get his point.
Source

I think SCEE or whomever did this preemptively, they saw 1-2? Forum posts of people that appeared offended, and immediately tried to stem things off fearing some kind of blacklash. I sincerely doubt the severity of the situation had they not performed the recall, and this kind of reaction only reaffirms my belief. You can't please everyone, but this was kind of silly IMO.

You might've considered this, but if you're not too set on playing LBP immediately, you could probably turn a bit of a profit considering you'll have the game early, and in its pre-censored state. I dunno how much of a markup though, but just throwing that out there that you could probably list it Considering the LBP fans paying just for the BETA keys..

ROFL, thats just retarded...

The artist who made that song was apparently muslim too. Nice job with the lyrics, imagine if this was Mario and in English instead of Arabic.

“AIFD stands against any form of censorship in the marketplace of ideas whether imposed by government or by corporations intimidated by the response of militants or those with an inappropriately sensitive level of political correctness,” Jasser said.

I like his way with words.

I can't tell if you agree with me or if you think my argument is retarded.

I'm just saying, the Playstation is an international brand, and the game is already being sold Arabic-speaking countries. Sony may be doing this as a preventative measure to avoid getting harassed by militants. I think they're doing it because they don't want to lose sales from having violent lyrics in their game that they're marketing to people of all ages.

I swear I google'd it and only found David Reeves comment from some months back. Anyone in the know?

I hope it went away because it'll ruin the community aspect they are trying to go for.

I think it's a little more complicated than that. Here is the Reeves quote:
Quote:
"What we're trying to do with LittleBigPlanet is almost iTunes meets eBay in the sense that once an individual or a developer has qualified by producing certain levels or certain add-ons, they will then be able in the future to exchange these and make money out of them," Reeves said. "Eventually, it's feasible that you might well see the first LittleBigPlanet millionaire!"
So it's more like having some premium content on top of the community content, but the process behind getting "qualified by producing certain levels or certain add-ons" is pretty nebulous. Saying it could be "an individual or a developer" is also a bit strange... will we see other game studio "guest designing" levels for LBP? After all there are already some guest staring sackboys with Cratos and Snake so... why not go the extra step and have a Kojima designed, MGS themed, LBP level?

I am not sure he would be too good at designing a platformer level, but that's another debate
