| Sony Announces $600 Blu-Ray Player This is not actually game related news but I'm not surprised that it happened. Sony is releasing a $599.00 Blu-ray player. $400.00 cheaper than the one currently being sold. I wonder if this will affect the price of the PS3? Link

+3 Internets | So to compile a list of what has hurt the image/allure of the PS3: -Loss of numerous exclusives -Incredibly high price -Egotistic snobbery (i.e. Ken Kutaragi) -Assaults in PS3 pre-order lines -Very poor launch line-up -Delayed European release -Smaller viable PS2 library for Europe (and Japan/US in future) -No rumble feature -New $600 Blu-Ray player Did I miss something? |

+1 Internets | I thought this topic was going to be like - "Title - Sony Announces $600 Blu-Ray Player." "Post - Its called the PS3!" I'm disappointed. [I don't see how Sony releasing cheaper standalone units can be anything but a good thing -- for the consumer anyway.] Edit - Just saw this on another forum.. Amazon.com: Philips BDP9000 Blu-Ray Disc Player: Electronics Amazon.com: Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player: Electronics $550 and $600 players. Why the big deal about this announcement? The PS3 is considerably better value than these other players too. I'd definately take a PS3 over a standalone unit, and I imagine most people would. Last edited by Cor : 02-28-2007 at 01:06 AM. |

Let's say Sony has two choices to devote resources: 1) pump up PS3 marketting/R&D to boost performance, and 2) work their asses off on BRDs to get the strongarm into the media war. Since the PS3 is almost an irreversible failure at this point, it's not economically viable to try to win the console war. Bigger fish are to be had by having the HD format... ...which is why the PS3 has a BR drive in it anyway =/ | |

+14 Internets | When I saw that they called Rumble a "last generation feature" I thought of exactly this. We need a "Sony PR are incompetent fuckups" thread although I guess a more general term like "Sony are incompetent fuckups" would work. |

| All PS3 would have had to have done to win the launch line up would have been to preview some of their stellar in house PS2 launch titles, select the best ones, then spend a year converting/enhancing them for the PS3. |
