You obvously never blew a kid away with a shotgun at close range.

It's only one itsy bitsy screenshot. But all my bitching aside, it looks very much like a modern FPS of the Fallout I once enjoyed.

Background and textures are spot-on.

Just picked up fallout 1 and 2 today, the nostalgia in this thread got to me and I decided I had to finally play this game. They're both installing on my laptop and I intend to play it during this god-awful rhetoric lecture class. I was reading on wiki about the games and read that some of the skills/traits were useless or very difficult to take advantage of and it made me worry about gimping my first character.

You guys got any tips on character creation or got any advice for a brand-new fallout player? I'd rather not get halfway through the game and realize my dude's a total pussy waste of space. I'd like to hear from some of you who have doubtless played it 3-4 times through.

Just played through the first one myself, as Fallout 3 and constantly hearing about the first two being amazing really piqued my interest. I must say, it's a really great game, and the graphics aren't too bad considering it's age.

I went through the game half way and realized my character was a pussy, then started over and got back to the same spot in about 1/10 the time and 10x more powerful. Learning as you go will really teach you what is/isn't important, but here's some tips to get newbies started:

I'd say definitely specialize in one weapon type and put points solely into that weapon type until you reach 200% skill level. You don't get energy weapons until later in the game, so you may want to have those as your second weapon type, and get that up after you've capped your first. Aside from weapons, I didn't feel the rest of the skills were all that important; I still don't know what half of them actively do, aside from their descriptions (First Aid and Doctor are the only other skills I really used and they're pretty much the same thing, except Doctor is more powerful. They work fine at low percentages; I'm guessing they're just more potent with higher skill)

- Don't underestimate Hand-to-Hand!

- Controls will take a few minutes to get used to, but they're not too complicated. Outside of battle you can toggle between a "Look/Examine" type mode, and a "Move" move by right-clicking your mouse. In battle, an "Attack" option is added into the mix.

- You can speed up battle in the options menu (I would max this out right from the start).

- Turn on auto-run in the options menu.

- Press 'N', in battle, to switch your weapons attack options (generally unaimed, aimed (target body part), and reload (if your weapon has ammo).

- Press spacebar, in combat, to end your turn.

- You can rest and restore hitpoints by pressing 'Z' and opening your PipBoy (didn't know this at first).

- You can use items on things in the world by right clicking them and selecting the backpack icon, then selecting an item from your inventory that pops up. (I didn't realize this until late in the game... if that's any indication how much it's used).

- You can give/take items to/from the people that join you by using the Steal command on them (can effectively use them as storage mules). They don't mind, as long as they're on your team.

- You can give your team members better weapons when you find them (ask them what type of weapons they use, and go from there).

- You can give your team members ammo when they run out (didn't know about the whole trading thing until a little later on and the guy was punching people because he had no ammo).

- Wouldn't recommend having any of your stats below 4; I'm sure a stat of 1 won't kill you, but certain parts of the game may be more difficult if you have certain low stats.

- Low intelligence gives you less options in dialogue; conversely, higher intelligence gives you more options in dialogue (you can sometimes avoid fights or receive items this way). That said, I did fine with 4 Intelligence.

- Eye/Head and Groin shots seem to be the most common aimed shots; can't recall ever using anything else

That's all I can think of for the time being

If you are making anything but a non-combat character, max agility.
Then focus your character toward either melee or ranged. Heavy weapons are useless since you get them about the same time as you get energy weapons and the energy are better and dont weigh a ton.
There are some end game perks that are really nice, you may want to figure out the prereqs and go that way.
GameFAQs has some really nice character creation templates for Fallout.

Also, max out agility.

Don't get overly hyped for this game, just because the media is running loopy for it doesn't mean it won't suck any more than Oblivion.

Can't remember for sure.. but I would go 9 agi instead of 10 in either fallout 1 or 2, can't you upgrade the stat permanently? Gifted/Fast shots are kinda insane starter traits, or small frame instead of fast shots somewhat. You get action boy later on and you're just amazing.. charisma is useless in fallout 1, but INT is important in both - gives more dialogue options (CH/2 = how many party members you can have in fallout 2). Fallout 1 is a little easier than 2, most of the skills you dont really need to worry about, in 2 a few play more important roles. Like doctor for instance, (ideal to get 80%) also lockpick can help in a lot of places.

Gifted is the best trait, I never see a good reason to not take it really since most skills are shit, so skill point loss isn't a bad thing. However don't take Skilled, like ever, cutting back on perks is just bad and again, most skills are shit so extra skill points ends up irrelevant, especially if you have even passable int. Mostly, you can get books for non combat skills too so there usually isn't a good reason to dump skill points in those (the real exception being stealing which as I recall has no book for it).

There isn't a good reason to max str in character creation, even if you want to go melee some gear you can eventually get adds str, and there is the BoS stat boost things you can get eventually. I think agi is passable at 8 or so, 10 isn't entirely necessary. For tags, it varies, if you are new just take small guns absolutely in either game (unless you really wanna do a melee build obviously), in the first one you can take energy to just not have to burn skill points later, and steal is useful in both games (and highly cheeseable too). As mentioned cha doesn't matter a whole lot, you can get by with 2 charisma easy in either game as I recall.

But all that being said, unless you gimp yourself by giving yourself no AP via dick all agi, or decide to tag outdoorsman, doctor and first aid rather than skills you can kill something with, you can't REALLY fuck yourself too awfully on character creation. Oh, don't gimp your luck. As I recall if you have like 1 or 2 luck you get critical failures rather frequently, or something like that. I remember making a luck gimp and it was terrible. And I think if you gimp your perception too much you get shitty turn order + you can't shoot ANYTHING at any significant range.

On second thought really there are quite a few ways to fuck your character up.

It's been years since I played them through. But Bonus Action points are divisible by 2, so you want 8 agi minimum. Waiting for the surgery option takes too much cash, and is too late in the game iirc. Snipers and HtH are king in the fallout games imo. Crits from snipers can instantly kill almost any creature in the game, especially with the right setup. HtH (Hand to Hand) is a very fun way to play Fallout 2.

Yeah, this is definitely something to keep in mind. I think I started over twice back when the game first came out. Balanced builds are nearly impossible, esp in 1
