Wii - Virtual Console

Has anyone messed with this much at all yet?

I bought 1,000 points (10 bucks) and downloaded Mario 64 off of it. It works great. Though I only played it for like 5 mins before I remembered I've done all this a thousand times before and got bored.

The interesting thing though is that you can copy your VC games to SD cards.

And well, that surely opens up a window for uh... eductional purpose tinkering.

My Wii isn;t online yet so I haven't messed with the VC. I'm looking forward to it though.

Didn't they say that each game downloaded has a unique something-or-other that ties it to your specific Wii so you can't just put stuff on SD cards and pass it around?

Supposedly. Closest friends I have with a Wii are like 45 miles away, sadly. Kinda hard to test atm.

I'll guess that it has an ID written into the file. Since you can put the file on an SD card and then look at the file on your PC I'm guessing that someone will find a way to rewrite the ID in them.

Super Mario 64 looks really really clear compared to the 64 version.

The files are encrypted and keyed to the owner/console. There's VC 'roms' floating around the net already but can not be played on anyone elses Wii so far. With something like that, it's probably only a matter of time when it will be cracked.

I'm sure people are working 'hard' somewhere, at trying to figure out how to run them or unsigned code on the Wii already.

I have a WII comming soon (picked one up on Ebay since they are sold out toally here and just about everywhere else). I bought it mostly for the first party titles and the VC games. I know its kind of retarded to buy a new console to play old school games when I can emulate them on my pc pretty well but there is something about playing those old school games the way they are meant to be played that made me take the plunge.

The new control scheme doesn't do much for me as I picked up a regular controller as well but I'll try and keep an open mind about it once it gets here.

I bought solomon's key, never played it before, but its great.

I'm looking forward to Nintendo World Cup and Dodgeball, I'd pay more then $5 for versions of those games that don't induce vomiting from the massive amounts of NES flicker.

Yah I'm kind of wondering how the original SMB will look on my 60 inch display...

All the VC games have supposedly undergone some conditioning to remove some of the old generation artifacts(like flickering I mentioned).

But, other then that, oldschool games look just as good as they did 20yrs ago on bigscreens.

Since most of these games are very undetailed sprites and lots of solid colors, they stretch really well, so they don't really look that odd on huge screens.

I've tried daily to connect to the VC shop, about 10% of the time I can get to the list of games, but it locks up after that. I've downloaded all the updates and the connection test says I'm fine.. what am I doing wrong here?

My Xbox 360 is in the same room of the house with 0 problem and my DS can connect to my router just fine, so I doubt this is my problem.

And wtf is up with the nunchuck, I can not find a second since launch day. You create a party console thats meant to be played with 4 people, and I cant even get a second controller. The nunchuck is going for about 50 bucks on ebay right now.

Most likely because nintendo's servers are being hammered by everyone. Just pretend you're tring to patch a MMO on the weekend of a major expansion release. ;p heheh.

Call me stupid, but does the wii have a hard drive? Where do you store the downloaded VC games?

Doesn't seem like very much, but then again I doubt if any 64 game was over a few MBs...

Change your broadcast channel to 1 and you'll have no problem downloading in most cases.
