PS3 RPGs

And now for the pitiful official PS3 list.

To be fair though - there are a lot of unnamed titles currently being developed that are kind of hard to list and a few unnanounced titles as well.

Japanese RPGs:

White Knight Story developed by Level-5

Release - Japan: December 2007, US: TBA

Final Fantasy XIII developed by Square Enix

Release - Japan: December 2007, US: TBA

Final Fantasy Versus XIII developed by Square Enix

Release - Japan: December 2008?, US: TBA

Enchanted Arms developed by FromSoftware

Release - Japan: December 2006, US: TBA

Mist of Chaos developed by Never-Land Company

Release - Japan: December 2007, US: Unknown

Western RPGs:

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion developed by Bethesda Game Studios

Release - Japan: Unknown, US: Q1 2007

Also available on: PC, X360

The Lord of the Rings: The White Council developed by EA Redwood Shores

Release - Japan: Unknown, US: TBA 2007

Also available on: PC, X360

Currently Released RPGs:

Western: Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom developed by Sony Online Entertainment

Again, to be fair, there are a lot of indevelopement untitled/unannounced games that aren't possible to list right now (unlike the X360, where basically everything is available for listing).

Also, Final Fantasy XIII/Versus and White Knight Story are really powerful titles - potentially more so than the x360's best offerings (which are really powerful in their own right).

The FFXIII battle scene on the train was in real time or just a CG scene? I saw a battle menu at one point. If so that title alone is worth buying a PS3.

It wasn't realtime *on the PS3*.

Also, since we're comparing between posts, everything but FF13 and Generations of Chaos(edit: WKS as well) is multiplat or a port of a 360 game.

Theres alot of un-named titles, but that means thier platform is also on the fence, and not really worth attributing to anyone for comparison.

Don't forget White Knight Story, Darus. Basically WKS and FF13/VS. are the only three titles worth mentioning.

FFXIII is sweet looking (especially versus ss' because the character looks very grim), but what exactly is this 3 part game? Are XIII and XIII Versus full games? And I know they don't expect me to play a game on my phone (apparantly where the third installment is).

They're full games - and it's not a multi-part game .hack style.

They're two full different games set in this new Fabula Nova Crystallis universe they've decided to create.

Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
Fabula Nova Crystallis, which means "the New Tale of the Crystal", is nevertheless based on various worlds and different characters, but each game will be "ultimately based on and expand upon a common mythos."
Quote:
Each of the games is independent of the others and only share a common mythological backdrop or 'mythos'. They are being developed by different teams of developers within Square Enix. However, the character designs for the three officially revealed games are by Tetsuya Nomura, who is also the director of Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Each of the games will have its own style of gameplay: Final Fantasy XIII is a turn-based RPG, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is more action-oriented a la Kingdom Hearts, and Final Fantasy Agito XIII is an online game. A possible fourth title, Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII may be in the works as well, as Square Enix made a trademark filing for the title on May 1, 2006.
This basically all revolves around their "The White Engine" project that they're devoting all of their resources to.

I think Square and its designers kind of sat down one day and thought "Maybe we should start doing more than one-shot games with these huge, unique worlds we're creating?"

Hopefully they do a better job than Dirge of Cerberus, though. Oh, the lost possibilities.

If the PS3 puts out even half the number of GOOD RPGs/SRPGs that the PS2 has, I will be happy. Until then, I'll wait for MGS 4 and FF13 to come out before purchasing a PS3.

QFT. I'm sure your're not the only one who is thinking this. There is no game for the next 6 months that is coming out that makes me want to buy a PS3.

I wish Square would cut the bullshit, re-hire the original Xenogears team, and make "Xenogears II: Xenogears Meets FF4," in which the Xenogears and FF4 characters join forces to save rock 'n roll from the Communists.

I can't wait to hear about what they've planned for the Agito. According to Wikipedia it is "utilizing gameplay functions only available through mobile phones" - wonder if that means some tie in with GPS. Say if you have to buy a new spell, instead of going to a library in game you'd have to use your mobile phone in a real library.

Though I'm not sure where you'd buy weapons, has to be something with a mark on a map.

I'm all for more games in each FF world. They put so much effort in them and they really come alive - a shame to drop it after only one game. That should let them pump out games faster too, if they don't have to come up with a new world for every game. 2-3 games per world would be just fine... especially another game for the FFXII world please

I can't say FFXIII really interests me much so far because I know none of the stuff we have been shown is in real-time. White Knight Story on the other hand looks really interesting to me. I had the chance to view the White Knight video on one of the official Playstation Demo stations (which for some reason run in 750p on Sony televisions) and it looked really amazing. It seems like its one of the only PS3 games I have seen so far which is actually using anti-aliasing. The graphics aren't particularly amazing in a technical sense but I really liked the style. I hope more info for that game is made available soon.

I think people are over-estimating the amount of effort that goes into world building in most RPGs.

Any experienced P&P game designer can make a world as detailed as these games in less then a week(and I am not exaggerating on this mark).
Edit: And thats ignoring that Square has been using the same template for each world for over a decade.
Edit#2. And I'm not saying they're neseccarily bad, just that more time probably went into modeling Vaan's Abs and gayboy hairstyle than all the background and layout of the world. Its probably the shortest part of the development cycle, and I wouldn't be to upset only seeing one game for genericfantasy #13 insteada 3 or 4
