Bioshock 2 offically announced

2k Marin: BioShock 2 Is Very Official, Dated For Q4 2009

Take-Two Interactive announced today that BioShock 2 was officially in the works, under the development wing of the recently formed 2K Marin studio. The sequel—rumored to actually be a prequel—to the Xbox 360 and PC shooter is planned for a fourth-quarter fiscal 2009 release date. Take-Two's fiscal year ends October 31, so expect it to hit unspecified platforms (read: Xbox 360) before the '09 holidays.

Take-Two also noted that the original BioShock has 2 million unit sales under its belt since its August '07 release. No pressure, 2K Marin! No pressure at all.

Not entirely sure how they're going to sequel this. It's not like it was left open ended.

BioShock 2 Officially Announced news from 1UP.com

UPDATE: A Take-Two representative has confirmed to Shack News that Ken Levine will be involved in the BioShock 2 project in some capacity, saying "[Levine] is critical to BioShock." Reassuring news, though it's still unclear how closely Levine will be working with the 2K Marin studio during development, especially since he almost certainly has his own new projects to work on with his team at 2K Boston.

ORIGINAL STORY: Consider us not very shocked at today's announcement from Take-Two Games that a sequel to last year's uber-successful BioShock is on the way. Take-Two says they are aiming for a fall 2009 release for the game, sticking to their previously-revealed desire to release a new BioShock game every two years.

As had been heavily rumored, BioShock 2 will be developed by the brand-new 2K Marin studio, which was formed by a group of BioShock developers late last year. That means that 2K Boston and presumably BioShock lead brain Ken Levine will not be directly involved in the sequel.

In addition to the hardcore-exciting BioShock news, Take-Two also passed along some scraps for the casuals. Bragging that their Wii minigame collection Carnival Games has sold over one million units since its August 2007 launch, 2K Play announced two new games in the franchise. First off is a portable Nintendo DS version of Carnival Games due out this summer, followed by the brand-extending Carnival Games: Mini-Golf for the Wii this fall.

We're all excited for the Mini-Golf, no doubt, but what we really would like to know is whether or not that rumor about the next BioShock game actually being a prequel is true. After all, how else is a return visit to Rapture going to be possible? Hopefully more information will be forthcoming shortly.

It would be neat to see Rapture as Andrew Ryan envisioned it. As a working metropolis. Not sure how they'd use the main character from the first one again but who knows.

I hope this one has more than three types of enemy, and maybe some actual AI!

AI wasn't too bad...granted it was a bunch of triggers that would happened depending on what you did but still wasn't like they just stood there.

funny how people always bring this up but seem to completely overlook it in games like Half Life, Gears of War, and Call of Duty 4.

Half-life only had 3 types of enemies? What the hell are you talking about? HL had like 20 different kinds of enemies.

Uhh, yea, Half-Life enemy design is probably the perfect 10. On the other side of the spectrum, F.E.A.R. had like, an endless mass of grunts, but their group AI was actually pretty decent and they used terrain well, so the fights didn't get boring. Combat in Bioshock got boooooooooring.
