Looks like they are getting hammered, which isn't a surprise really. I'm #91 in line!

This seems as good a place to ask as any... what books should I look for if I want to learn about Warhammer Lore? I've asked before but forgotten what was suggested. Anyway, I've never played Warhammer ($5+ for 1 figure = no thanks,) but the background and worlds seem very interesting. Also, I'd like to be up on what's what by the time Warhammer Online comes out.

Wikipedia is amazingly indepth. Unless you want to shell out a lot of money for rule books then that's the best place. The novels are strictly non-canonical and you'll get a lot of conflicting information from them.

Except, oh this is a RTS

And Mythic's Warhammer game is a MMORPG.

Nice try though

Yeah, didn't have to try too hard though. Because even after the last few threads about these two games it's still clear that THIS Warhammer:

is going to make Mythic's warhammer:

look like a Jack Thompson-friendly epcot-center vignette of a warhammer game.

I have a coworker in the WAR beta though, and while it IS looking grimmer and grimmer, it's still a sad WOW clone for the most part.

Fine then

Name me ONE successful MMORPG that has kept the grimness that certain Warhammer fanbois insist on? Guess what there isn't one. Why? Ask the 7 million WoW subscribers. At the end of the day some of us (and I'll put myself in this camp as well) want a grim game with blood, guts and all the demon sacrafice and possesion that makes Warhammer Fantasy so damn dark. But it quite simply does not work in the mmorpg market.

Well, if you're willing to stretch the definition of 'MMORPG' there is exactly ONE: The other Games Workshop game that Blizzard plagiarized from Advanced Heroquest, Diablo2.

Actually, Diablo and Diablo2, specifically with that gothic horror theme they had going throughout acts 1 and 4, is much closer to the warhammer ethos than Mythic's "waAAaa four years of midgard made me colorblind waaAAaa" art design.

Just finished the Demo. Seems interesting, but it's taking me awhile to get a hang of the "Rome : Total War" type RTS style.

Good :
- Graphics are fantastic.
- Pretty intuitive
- Interesting story

Bad :
- Loading times are kinda harsh; 2 minutes to load a campaign game, 30-60 seconds just to load the overland map.
- Can get really "stuttery" sometimes.
- Very flakey fighting in narrow areas; ie, atop castle walls.

Will keep an eye on this one, but not convinced to buy it at release.

And some SSs. These are all taken with all max settings:

Hmm I just d/l'd and played it and had none of those problems, granted I'll have to check my settings to make sure im maxxed out.

My pros and cons (of the demo mind you):

Pros: Very damn close to Warhammer lore/feel
Throwback to the old Shadow of the Horned Rat game feel
Get to play as the "bad guys"

Cons:
Not many, but my number one gripe was that this game takes micromanagement to a whole new level. If you thought Company of Heroes was bad, this is 10x worse. It might be a demo issue, but there is no quick way to really cycle between heroes and their abilities. Spoilers: This becomes a major issue on the 3rd map when you have to duel an opposing Chaos champ.
Also (again keeping in mind it is beta) the hero skills are both un-intuitive, and rather blah. You cannot (that I have found) unselect a skill you choose, even prior to hitting "ok," which leads to wasting skill points oftentimes. Also the descriptions of the skills sometimes do not make sense or do not seem to stack/work despite 3-5 skill levels for it.

On a 10 point scale, I would thus far rate it a 7. It is better than your average RTS, but it still has a LOOOOOOOOONG way to go to be a "good" RTS.

Indeed they are slow as molasses. I should have added that to my cons list.

Running is an option but supposedly it drains stamina (or maybe morale i forget which).

You can run with your troops but that would burn your stamina, which adjusts your effectiveness.

Runspeed for infantry is obviously slow on these Myth-type games (Bungie actually plagiarized Warhammer with Myth:The Fallen lords, a few years before Shogun Total War) because speed and shock are Cavalry benefits.

If you haven't gotten into Myth or Total War, this wouldn't be the best place to discuss those games, but theyre far FAR superior to the dune2 RTS derivatives out there. This game is a welcome addition, I was actually worried that they would go with a stupid dune2 derivative gameplay with resources and buildings, thankfully they stuck with a tabletop simulation instead.

My CONS would be: They're planning to release on November 14th, which is Medieval2:Total War's release date. As much as I love warhammer, I doubt I'd skip M2TW for anything :P
