Xbox 360 or PS3?

If money is not an issue, which system seems to be regarded as the way to go? I know the PS3 isn't out yet and costs more, but I am trying to decide on getting a 360 now or waiting for the PS3. I have a 65" HD tv so the HD side of the console is important to me. I want to take advantage of the TV.

I don't know if it's possible to get an accurate answer since both have their fans for various reasons. But if anyone has an unbiased opinion please share. They are both somewhat expensive so I can't have both. I don't want to have buyers remorse. I never post and mostly just read and I know there are some very informed gamers here. Any thoughts are appreciated.

On a side note I don't even know which games are available for which system. I haven't looked into anything on these systems because I haven't had the cash to drop until now. I hate wanting something and not being able to have it so have avoided any research. I have no idea what looks good, plays good etc. So if you recommend the 360 also recommend the must have game for it.

Thanks

B

It's a very, very difficult question to ask. Right now, you should rephrase your question to "get a 360 now, or a PS3 at the earliest a year from now?" because its library will be absolutely barren until at least then.

What makes it so tricky is we don't know if the PS3 will actually amass a decent library as the PS2 did. The 360 will have games you can play if you bought it right now, and I hear Gears of War is something of a beast.

Also, if I were to choose PS3, I wouldn't buy any from the initial half year anyway, regardless of title selection. I don't trust Sony to make decent hardware during a period where they're stretching to produce units.

It's gonna come down to your setup and exclusive games. Right now, 360 has Halo 3 coming out next year (hopefully because I have the legendary version on pre-order) and Gears of War which looks unbelievable. GTA IV is hitting 360 BEFORE ps3 and smackdown vs. raw development was so far behind that they skipped 07. If you're talking about launch, get a 360 because not only is the library there, but Guitar Heroes II is hitting it in the spring (tentative date). Downloadable content on guitar heroes makes me happy! Hopefully next year, the library will pick up. While I don't want blu ray to be the standard, i dont want it to flop because I know a bunch of people who are getting it and I don't want them to blow so much money on a failure.

I think the library will pick up, but when it comes down to it, I'm not sure they'll have the exclusive library outside of MGS and FF. I wanna see more out of them before I buy a PS3.

So, if you're going to get one for the holidays, but a 360. It's established and has a great library, PLUS Gears of War is going to be amazing. PS3 will be too unestablished this holiday season to gauge it's success and that's A LOT of money to spend on something with such a hazy future.

If money is really not an issue get both =) But like others have said the 360 already has a library of games to choose from. It's hard to say how reliable the first batch of PS3s will be. They have cut production multiple times because of production issues. My first gen 360 died on me 9 months after I had it heh. Something with the boot process is my guess. It would take about 40 tries to power it up w/o the red ring of death. After it was booted it I could play it for hours just fine though.

Unless PS3 does something cool for online features it seems like if a game comes out for both systems you may be better off with the 360 version for online play/features.

Unless you have a pre-order for a PS3 good luck getting one till after January.

The PS3 may be a better value if you plan to make heavy use of its extra features.

-BR player
-Is a complete Linux PC you can use out of the box(good for HT use)
-One thing PS3 definetly has over 360 is that it supports KB and Mouse play for games, UT2007 is going to be KBM compatible on PS3.

If your not planning to use any of those features, and your main concern really *is* just games, then get a 360, theres no comparison atm far as librairy goes, 360 buries PS3 and will for another year at least probably.

I was all about sony from the original playstation onward, and I will likely get a PS3 when the game library fleshes out a bit better and you can actually find one in stores. That said, the 360 really is a quality system now, there are 5-6 games that are system buyers around Christmas time imo. (Gears of War and Dead Rising to name two.)

I have no idea the specifics, but I've been playing video games for two decades, and the 360 is the only system that I have ever gone way out of my "genre comfort zone" to play other games. I'm renting shit for the 360 that I would never have touched on my PS2 or any other system. 360 has a quality controller which I actually prefer to the PS2 controller, which I never though I'd ever say. The online component while it costs money is still decent.

You mentioned "must have" games. I would recommend off the top of my head
1) Dead Rising - Regardless of your genre preference in video games, I haven't met anyone yet who didn't at least have some enjoyment with this game.

2) Burnout Revenge - Most people like owning one racing game, if you like arcade racing, this is a great choice, if realism is more your style, Project Gotham Racing is pretty good.

3) Oblivion - If you're into that kind of thing.

There are a lot of other quality games as well depending on your interests, not a lot of single player RPG games aside from Oblivion and Enchanted Arms. There's a mountain of sports games and fantastic action titles like Splinter Cell: Double Agent and Ghost Recon Action Warfighter. Not to mention Call of Duty 3, Tony Hawk Project 8, Half Life 2 (which comes with both episode 1 and 2), Lost Planet and about a dozen other good looking titles coming out either this year or early next.

I would recommend buying a 360 this year, you probably won't get the same immediate "wow" factor with a PS3.

"The ps3 is the best deal out there ...for those who can afford it".

Really if you can afford the ps3, getting the console with the biggest game selection + blu-ray is the best deal out there. A console half it's price isn't a bad thing, just don't expect it to give you the same thing for those paying the $

As of now I would go with the 360 and I'm a Sony fan. This is the 1st Sony system I will not be buying at launch. The $600.00 price tag is not well worth it with the library of games at launch. Hell I was pissed off that I bought a 360 at launch with it's mediocre library. Maybe within 6 months to a year I will get one when the library is much better. 360 has Rainbow 6, Gears of War and Call of Duty 3 coming out this month. Gonna be a very good month for the 360.

Plus the prototype of the PS3 at the Toyoko game show malfuctioned due to overheating. That really worries me since the PSU is inside the casing. I've been lucky so far with each 1st generation systems I bought.

I have a strange relationship with video games these days (I spend more time reading/writting about them and piling them up than actually playing them for fun) but as far as I am concerned the Xbox 360 shapes up to be exactly like the previous Xbox, or maybe a tad better. That translates into about 2 exclusive games that interest me a year. That's not a lot.

If the PS3 manages to not completly flop (which is unlikely but is not impossible) I am pretty confident in its abbility to provide me with a fairer share of interesting exclusive games.

The odd part of it all is that I am pretty sure that for at least a year to come, if not more, the machine that will remain the most interesting, as far as exclusive releases go, is the PS2. No wonder: the installed base is huge and it's growing faster that the 360's. Unless Sony decides to pull the plug (and they won't) I am sure the PS2 will also sell more than the PS3 for a while.

That's an even better reason to wait a year. If the prototype is overheating, it's very likely that some retail units will have the same problem.

Also, I don't consider Dead Rising a "must buy". It's a great game and incredibly fun, but I wouldn't buy a 360 for it. Oblivion or GoW on the other hand, are worth buying the system. Assasin's Creed was something Sony touted as a big gun, but now that's a multi platform launch and GTA has flipped and gone with the 360 first and PS3 later (see MS E3 06 conference). Definitely best to wait a year until everything pans out.

In terms of hardware power there isn't much of a difference between the 360 and the PS3. Unless you are one of those few people who can take advantage of HDMI then it is even less of a matter.

I was a long time Xbox hater but I picked up a 360 a little over a month ago and I have been enjoying it quite a bit. There are not a lot of "must-haves" at the moment, but there are a good amount of good, fun games. There are also a lot of big games coming out fairly soon and the system itself really isn't that expensive. Xbox Live is pretty awesome as well and they way you can link the 360 with your PC (assuming you use Windows) is pretty damn cool in my opinion.

On the other hand the PS3 is coming out soon and it will release with a lot of games in the United States. In Japan there are only 6 launch games and after demoing their TGS versions last week I can say that I am not very excited about them (Genji, Gundam Ridge Racer 7, Mahjong Game, Golf Game, Resistance). There are like 10 more games for the U.S. launch, but other than Oblivion (which is available on the 360 as well) it looks like a bunch of recycled sports games etc...
Sony's online plan has yet to be proven and it doesn't look like they will necessarily be encouraging developers to make their games online. There are already a few cross-platform games that are announced to be only online on the 360.

I definitely think it would be a better idea to wait at least until next spring or until one of the "big" titles is released before getting a PS3. I am still fairly certain that Sony will be number one again this generation, but at this point in time there is more quality to be had in the 360. Besides you can save yourself the stress of having to camp out a week in advance to get a PS3 at launch.

Hrrm. This question has lots of triquery in it indeed. I'm going to cut to the chase.

The Xbox360 underwhelms me. I believe it is too insistant.

If MS pulls off a [edit:rumoured]WoW exclusive for their console it may just be the injection needed to get the critical inertia needed for more game developers to concentrate on the Xbox360 platform. WoW in your living room or where ever could really move units. More units means more interested developers.

What does the Xbox360 have that's hella dope that you can't get anywhere else? I don't mean quasi-dope. I mean hella system must have now dope. Xbox live is cool and all but why must they charge so? The others (N and S) say their online service will be free. You know, for the most part.

Isn't there going to be a price drop for the x360? If so I may wait for that to happen first before dropping dough into it. Plus it needs a hardware revision imo. That way the disk based media price comparison is closer to $500 for hd-dvd compared to $600 for the br-dvd.

Also do you care about motion sensing and future proofing etc?

I haven't even gotten to the real meat of the matter and already this looks like a wall of text so I will sign off and let others chime in.

E: LOL at the anger.

Not according to Gamespot.

I plan on owning both, but for now the 360 is enough for me. I will pick up a PS3 in about a year when the exclusive games I want start coming out (Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, and hopefully Final Fantasy XIII by early 2008).

On IGNs front page, you can see screens of NBA and NHL 2K7 and well, it doesnt look very good. It looks significantly more choppy and jagged than the 360 version. I always accused 360 of looking too rubbery, but I'll take rubbery over those models. The environments look very good, especially the ice in NHL, but not much better than the 360 version. When you factor in how much better the models look, it really doesn't make that big of a difference.

I'm really hoping the 08 versions look better for PS3. I'm sure it's because they're pretty much ports due to the difficulty of programming for PS3.
