I played some QTF back in the day, but I was a far bigger fan of Tribes. The mod where you have to use vehicles because the ground makes you explode was fucking awesome.

Man, I used to live, eat, breathe QWTF back in the day. Z [RAGE], wasn't too well known, but at one point in time I was voted one of the top 5 scouts on... ... crap, what was that site? TFTimes?

I remember seen Jaql on Innoruuk- and there were a few more of them too.

But yeah, I hope that it is all the old-style mechanics... the conc grenade change that eliminated conc jumps took 3/4 of the skill out of a good scout. I used to be able to run backwards through all of 2fort4 or 2fort5 and hit all concs everywhere- water to sniper ledge, bridge to ledge, entrance to drop... ramp room was my playground. Nadas- our defender demoman- and I would spend HOURS in there just sparring- I got to the point where I could pipe jump off a defender's pipes.

I sure hope TF2 sucks... I can't give up that much of my life again.

Guess I am the only one who hated the RJ/Gen/Conc jumping cheese. I just always thought it was funny how people defended those things, saything they took so much skill to master, etc etc. I picked those things up easily and could use them efficiently, but it just wasn't a challenge/fun for me.

At any rate, they need to hurry up. :/

I can definitely see where people thought they were kinda lame, but to me (just to bring in another thread- the Thief one) it was the most "covert ops"-ish that I ever really got to feel in a multiplayer game. I suck at FPSes, because I can't shoot for crap.

But with conc jumping it didn't matter. There was only one clan (and I'll be damned if I remember who it was- I think it was BH) who left a HW guy in the RR of 2fort5 who could stop me there. I'd go through match after match where I *might* have a kill or two (engies in the flag room) but otherwise I'd do nothing but run (and more to the point, conc jump) like a crazy mofo.

And it was possible to win like that.

During the "cheese" era you had two choices, kill the other guy (using one set of skill) and get past him... or conc past him (using a different set of skills). QWTF is one of the few games... ever... that really utilized that second set of skills.

It was more then skill, it was strategy. It wasnt cheese because it came at a cost, namely your health and/or orientation. Do you stop and fight, or try to RJ away. You can take the "cheese" path, but you will be lower on health during your next encounter. Scouts could conc jump to gain even more speed, but it also made them wobble all over the place which made them have hard times running over small paths/up ramps.

Theres also a big difference between being able to RJ/conc, and being able to do it well. Pretty much anyone could conc jump from the bridge to nest in 2fort, or the bridge to the top of well6, but can you do it while 3 soldiers and a sniper are on you? Can you do it from the water so noone see's you? Can you adapt if it goes wrong?

I used to play RR on defense, and the scouts who simply tried to conc jump into the elevator by just dropping a gren and trying to time the jump were slaughtered. I'd here the gren hit, go stand by the door, and they would litterly just throw themselves at me. The scouts with skill would run me in circles, try to conc me, or distract me while their other scout friend ran in and conc jumped through from one of the paths to the RR. I'd try to stop that scout, but the other one who was distracting me would take that moment to run up the ramps, or do his own conc jump. For a good scout you could just never really tell what they were going to do.

BHing was the only thing I never liked, because it had no downside. It destroyed the set speeds for classes, so you could have a hwguy flying around like a scout, but with full body armor. I hope TF2 retains all the RJing and gren jumping, but leaves BHing out of it. Its fine in DM where theres no place your trying to get too, but in a team CTF game, its the definition of cheese.

Droc, here. Clan in a Box 4ever. Played with my roommate Vinvega.

Remember distinctly pissing GT off in a 2fort4 match. Fuckers went from their names to their numbers and stopped talking. They had been losing to us, soon as they went all hardcore we started losing. Was nuts.

All these years later, I still hate 5th Element. Cheesedicks.

MP was another Clan I hated, mainly because CiaB could beat them, yet MP thought of themselves as elite.

DJedi were cool guys.

I hated how 99% of servers basically only ran 2fort4/5. There were quite a few good CTF maps and TeamFortress allowed for many unique playmodes.

I think I played Demo in a clan called SilverDragon, wasn't particularly well known.

Rock, Well, and a couple of others were reasonably popular, at least (Hunted President?.)

Has anyone mentioned http://www.fortress-forever.com/ yet? I just skimmed the previous posts.

They've been developing a new TFC for a while now. They're planning a beta release in just a couple of weeks.

Anyone remember Quake 1 TF, where it all started? THAT was good times. Remember the portal vote maps? A bunch of doorways were open, and whichever doorway most people went through, you played that map.

Quake 1 TF had so many great maps. You had all the popular maps Half Life has now, plus fun novelty ones like Civsaw, and the one where you had to stop the Mexican immigrants from crossing to the other side of the map.

Bunch of old Quake 1 TF maps:

2fort4 was awesome in its simplicity. I never got tired of it, although I understood why there was a rebellion against it later.

Well was awesome, Rock was...that's the prison one, right?

The best TF map was Canalzon, though. No flags, control points (basically, it was Arathi Basin).

Was an awesome few weeks when the IGL rotated that map into the rotation.

Hunted was so damn fun. Rock could be cool, but I had to be in the mood for it.

Old School TF was the only reason I got Quake 1. I got hooked on it at a local cyber cafe. I remember hearing rumors of 2 cool new classes; Spy and Engineer!

Gaw, had forgotten about most of those. Well, Canal Zone,... OMG, and Sewer! Wasn't that the one you could detpack open/close the "secret" entrances? I also remember one called "All4One" or somethign where you had 4 bases, an outdoor area connected with bridges, and an underground area which connected all 4. And that one where you had the control room or whatever and the bridge over lava and it was very dark outside. That + Sniper + Grappling gun = pwnage

Yeah, rock was where you got the key and ran to the gas chamber (thus capping the flag,) and poison gas was released. Everyone who doesn't grab a suit or jump in the water dies.

Great map.

Half Life 1 TFC is still pretty damn popular with a few hundred active servers. I was playing it on and off a few months ago.

Control point maps are still very popular. Avanti, as I recall, is great one.

Then you have the offense / defense maps.

Ah that silly poison gas...

I really hope TF2 is as fantastic as it needs to be.

Yea, no way in hell anyone would remember me, but I used to use the Nick DeadlyJustice and played a crapload on public servers on Quake World splitting my time mostly between DemoMan and Engineer.

Personally, my favorite map was 2fort23, never really liked 2fort4 but the rock was alot of fun too.

I think the thing that killed TFC for me the most was how badly detpacks were gimped.

And I used to visit keeg.com like religiously.

The 2fortX series were fine, the problem (imo) was that they were overused many servers only running them 24/7.
