Mass Effect

Bioware's Mass Effect being shown behind closed doors

A trilogy of Sci-fi RPG's for the 360. Sounds interesting, is there more information anywhere on it?

I dunno, looks a whole lot like KOTOR to me. All the armor (right down to the eye pieces) look almost exactly like some of the stuff you could equip in KOTOR. If this dude didn't have two laser guns on his back (instead of strung around his waist) I'd say this was KOTOR 2.5, Revenge of the Shaders:

You say that like KotOR freed from the retardation of LucasArts would be a bad thing...

You mean guns could do something!?!

But in all seriousness from the tidbits from Mass Effect forums and interviews this sounds like it will be a lot different than KOTOR.

What are you thinking of that makes it sound so much different from KOTOR? The FPS shooting is definitely a stretch, but they're reeling that in by having stats and skills affect it,which I'm afraid is gonna suffer from the Morrowind problem of having visible hits show up in the chat box as a miss because I rolled a 2.

And whatchou talkin' 'bout, Vorph? What part did LucasArts play in the KOTORs? I never really followed any of the development of either game...just waited patiently to download it and then wtfpwn the galaxy.

The part where they pressured Bioware/Obsidian Ent. to shove the sequel out the door long before it was finished. Whole sections of the game were just walled off, the ending was completely half-assed, etc.

The most commonly attributed sideeffect of Lucas Arts was that KOTOR 2 was rushed and didn't have the time to be developed. Whether that's entirely true, KOTOR2 had to leave out a lot of stuff originally planned.

As for some differences I'll make a short list:
I've heard but haven't seen anything recently about vehicles, could anyone confirm or deny this?

New Dialogue System seems worse to me, like Oblivion seemed dumbed down from Morrowind equivalent. Here is some pictures of the new wheel setup. (http://www.vg-forum.it/showthread.php?p=60812#post60812)

Short 8 sec clip (http://www.masseffect.it/index.asp?Page=Downloads) shows combat seems to be more active or at least fast paced.

But I think the biggest change is this is the first Bioware game that I know that isn't being developed as just one game. There is going to be an overarching storyline to the three games so it will be interesting to see if the story can feel as complete as other Bioware games when this game is over.
Here is some more cool stuff for ME:

Quoted for truth. I played the 2nd one actually hoping for a decent sequel. From the really confusing as hell storyline, with just evil Sith Lords just thrown in there all randomly, to the completely bullshit ending I received, both Light Side and Dark, this game was horribly rushed.

I am so looking forward to this game, I pray to heaven that it's as good as the promise it seems to hold. Would probably make me buy a 360 just to play this plus Gears of War.

I'm wondering if this is a 50% fmv rpg that you beat in 20 hrs or something much better. The article hints that it is, but I don't trust those people.

Full Motion Video RPG, ala FF7-X. The little video clips that play after a major event or whatever are called FMVs.

I love them. I just would rather have 100+ hrs of gameplay with some fmv's instead of hours and hours of fmv's in a game that you beat in a few days. But I guess if they had the resources to make several hours of fmv's and the insane gameplay as well for $40-50 then that's ok.

Ah thanks James, I'd never heard that term. I suspect in this regard it will be like every other Bioware game, Kotor, JE, Baldur's Gate. A lot of the story will be driven by dialogue but you'll have choices (good/neutral/evil) unlike videos that take the control away from you.
