As grotesque as this character might be, he is actualy issuing press releases, making himself visible, offering his time and presence for interviews, etc. Is there some people in the video game industry doing the same thing in order to have an image in the media that is closer to some sort of reality or are publishers too busy shooting themselves in the foot?

This guy, as of late, has lost a lot of credibility. Various people who once backed him or saw him as an "expert" (which he is in no shape or form an expert) have backed away from him when his true colors showed. This guy is nothing more than a narcissitic asshole. He will do anything to see himself on TV. The less the publishers pay attention to him the better, doing the opposite just feeds this guys ego, and people's views that he maybe right in his views.

The media only shows the sensational side of the story. Same reason you get stories where some eco-nutjob is screaming the world is about to end or some biblethumper telling us that the world really was made 6000 years ago and that dinosaur fossils where placed there by God to test our faith.

They don't show the boring common sense side of the stories (since that would show that there was no 'story' to begin with). If they stuck to factual reporting they'd run out of stuff to fill a program with very quickly.

Media is just business, it works by making you think that what they show you is important enough for you to give them your money by buying their newspaper or (indirectly) by watching their channel. An enormous amount of this overblown crap gets thrown in with the real news, and plenty of people will never know the difference anyway. Because of this, they turn into parrots that repeat whatever the nice man in the suit tells them is "important". Video game violence/nudity is just one more "important" issue for them to worry about.

Jack Thompson is living proof that all of his theories on video game violence are totally invalid. If he was right, then clearly someone would have killed him by now. Preferably in a re-enactment of something out of Postal 2.

That's a tremendous point actually. When I look at his theories, I see it this way. Millions (if not billions) of people play video games almost every day. Out of all those people, there have been what, 10 cases of kids who their parents claimed use video games as a means for murder. Sociopaths are sociopaths regardless. If theyre going to kill someone, theyre going to do it. How they get the ideas to kill that person could come from a tv, a video game, or music. Hell, it could even come from reading a book, newspaper, well you get the idea.

Jack Thompson is just trying to take his personal vendetta against the gaming industry (why he has one is beyond me) and tried to turn it into a holy war. But like I said before, when you only have 10 cases out of millions of people, it's kind of tough to make a serious arguement.
