Enemy ranged heroes have a hard time harassing other ranged heroes. As a melee vs a range, it is very difficult to get kills without getting harassed severely. You have never witnessed this?

I have witnessed that. That has nothing to do with whether or not those ranged heroes are strength or not. I realize that making him be melee would make it much more difficult, for the reason you posted, but what does that have to do with what stat you are?

It is the combination of the two.

1) Range heroes have good early games allowing them to farm a lot.
2) Strength heroes have good late games, especially when they farm a lot.

Other scenarios:

Agility ranged:

Good early game farming, but heavily reliant on items, thus poor early game heroes. They are good midgame because they have farmed all earlygame and are not being overpowered by lategame heroes (strength)

Agility melee:

Poor early game farming, poor early game harassing. Good midgame farmers but heavily reliant on items and thus good lategame and poor midgame heroes.

Intelligence ranged:

Good early game farmers and great early game harassers, thus making them excellent early game heroes. Although they can farm a lot, their spells do not scale (mostly) and thus have poor late games, and good midgames.

Intelligence melee:

Poor early game farming and decent earlygame harassing (spells), they end up being heavily mid/late game heroes (ogre, dirge, etc).

Strength melee:

Decent/poor early game farmers and poor early game fighters. Midgame they can farm quite a bit but still are dominated by enemy spells/disables. Good late game heroes.

Strength range:

Decent/good early game farming and poor harassing, allows for a sooner late game and easier acquisition of late game items. Great midgame farming and decent midgame fighters. Great lategame farmers and incredibly powerful lategame fighters.

Ah ha, that's what I was missing. Thanks for putting those pieces together for me. I still submit that his ultimate blows, but at least now I get why strength ranged heroes are so good. Are there even any other strength ranged besides him?

He kind of reminds me of Ursa. Insanely powerful 1v1 but if you happen to have a disable he becomes useless pretty quick.

Huskar is pretty amazing if you can farm him right, his ult will do 40% of his (either max or current? cant remember which) hp, and the higher levels do less dmg to you, lvl 16? or so does 23%.. as he gets hurt more his attack speed raises.. can toss a decent heal the higher his str stat (or whichever stat is highest.. but I assume str would be) - and the arrows are good dps overall. Plus, having all that str gives him some decent regen to begin with.

Just recently I had a game w/him, boots of speed, vanguard, sange, and like 2/3 bracers, we had their team totally raped - not saying it was all due to me, but right when heroes would come in ultimating one at the start almost knocked em out instantly and shifted the battle. As far as the new heroes go hes one of my fav.

Just incase you were wondering, each point of strength adds .01 health regen (I think, possible .02, I get hp and mana regen mixed up!). VERY NEGLIGIBLE.

I find the zombie guy kinda underwhelming, great pusher if you are matched up against the right hero(s), but Leviathan in his lane makes him completely useless.

He is very difficult to kill, (good base strength/strength growth, zombies heal) and does damage per second to everyone, which scales well with the game. I've concluded that a simple Mekansm->Radiance build works great on him, just run around and burn them to the ground!

Reverend Mother, I have sinned... and started playing DotA like I'm hardcore.

I've found I really like, and seem to do well with, Shadow Priest.

Shadow Priest is incredible. He adds ridiculous survivability to a push, his "slow" poison is more like a "stop" poison, and if you use heal for damage you actually nuke quite well. Plus, his attack damage comes out to be really, really high. Basically, I love the Shadow Priest.

Zombie was the first new hero I played.

Pretty interesting little guy. Good pusher and his ult is handy. I tried to go Dagon to go with his ult but it wasn't as pwn as I thought it'd be. Had BoT and would change lanes and leave zombies, heals would track across the map back to me. Only bad thing is that enemies can sort of locate you if they see the heal skulls flying around.

Maybe if you go BF or Bashers and Heart, or a guinsoo.

I found Mek/Radi to be a great build. Gives him quite a bit of survivability and he becomes a walking melt machine. Add a Heart for ultimate tankage.
