Diablo 1 was hacked to shit, Blizzard stepped it up and when Diablo 2 came out it was much better. I'm sure they've learned a lot about hacking/bots, especially maintaining the largest MMO in the world.

As for the art direction... I don't think we'll see any more Durance of Hate or Catacombs Level 4, which is a shame, but I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as the change from SC1 to SC2, and it's definitely no WoW.

I don't think you could really get away too easily with the level of gore in D2, now that we're in the world of 3D.

It worked well in Champions of Norrath. Clerics aren't exactly defenseless, make them stronger against undead type of thing. I dunno just be pretty sweet if they at least based a class around it.

I think some people underestimate how big Diablo 2 still is. 40k+ users play it on battlenet every night. According to Big Boards the 7th highest traffic forum on the internet is a D2 trade forum.

I have to say I actually like the art style, everything else looks like the Diablo we know and love. My only concern is that I suspect the Witch Doctor is the replacement for the Necro which makes me kind of sad.

Also the character death animations in that boss fight were completely badass. Barb got his head ripped off.

i liked that gameplay movie on the site till that big guy came charging out at the end. I expected a big fight, but not against something out of like Doom 3

Impressions after watching the gameplay vid in HD:

I'm happy Diablo is back, and 3 appears to be shaping up as a worthy heir, but... no pots? besides the management aspect, pots were great to modulate damage output - no mana pots means no more skill spam bursts when the need arose. Other gameplay implications: hardcore without rejuvs? They've also removed the inventory grid and now works like the wow inventory: each slot holds one item, regardless of size. I'm not so sure about this neither, there were many trade-off implicated in the management of inventory size - specially factoring in charms. I don't want to be worried, but they appear to be streamlining anything that isn't pure button mashing.

Anyways, this was only the preface for 3 long years of blue balls hell so until then, we'll see.

Is that number recent? They just did a ladder reset and lots of people are playing now. I would have liked to see numbers before they announced the reset.

Of course even before the reset you could walk into many gamestores and buy it so someone was still playing.

I can't wait for this game...it's been way too long in the making, but already I want to play it!!!
