Emulators and quality

I don't play with emulated games very much, but whenever I do it tends to be some SNES or Genesis game, and they're never in full resolution. This bugs the shit out of me. It's also been bothering me that the ZNES version of Super Mario RPG: Seven Stars has all kinds of blinking shit with dialogue boxes and is at like 1/2 resolution. Is this what I should come to expect or does it mean I should look for a better ROM?

I've never had very good luck with game emulators, myself.

Part of why I'm looking into this Gametap thing that I posted about in another thread. It certainly doesn't have all the old games I'd want to play, but it does have a pretty good selection, and if it works well, it's worth 15 bucks a month to me just to be able to fire up a good, solidly working game of Elevator Action or Robotron 2084 and fuck around with it.

I use zsnes and don't have any of those problems. You can go into video settings and turn up the resolution. You can also turn on various filterings to make it look better than the actual SNES as well.

I suppose you could just have a bad rom though /shrug. Check out http://www.edgeemu.com/. I get all mine from there and they all work fine.

Snes9x is a better (imo) emulator than ZNES, the only thing you loose is online play.

A lot of SMRPG rips are very bad...something about that cart (extra size?) meant the normal ripping didn't work correctly. If you get a good rom it will run great with newest version of zsnes or snes9x

Znes and Snes9x have both been having difficulties running Super Mario RPG, it has always been very glitchy for a long period of time.

If the roms resolution has been toned down, it's probably so it's playable with the emulators.

There is also the fact that these games pretty low resultion looked fine on a TV and its low definition screen. On a PC screen the image is way too sharp, so you have to use filters and tricks for it to not look like Lego-land.

no amount of filters or tricks will ever really work well. The only way is to have a video out card and send the signal to your TV screen =p

The only resolution-improving enhancement I know of are the high-rez texture packs for N64 games. NES games would be difficult to improve, I would think.
