Fallout - problem

So I went out, and found a used copy of Fallout 1, based off of the rave reviews that you guys give it.

I installed the "Humongous" installation, patched it with the v1.1 patch.. but the game still crashes after the first frame of the intro movie. (The "Please Stand By" with the Indian)

If you guys know any websites that can help, or maybe know how to fix the problem, I would be grateful, as I'd really like to play the game.

Man, I have no idea. Maybe it's just so old it doesn't like your flavor of DX?

I've gotten Fallout 2 to run fine on my current PC, but haven't tried 1 since I rebuilt my system.

Good luck!

Where did you get the patch from? I'd say reinstall and try the one on this site. Lots of good info there too, might be able to get some help on their boards.

I run it with the latest version of DX with no problems, but you could try running it as a win98 program through XP too.

I had that same crashing issue in FO1. It's a sound driver issue with the FMVs in the game, and I could never make it work even with win95/98 compatibility mode.

Are you still using XP SP1 by chance? The problem went away for me when I upgraded to SP2, and now both Fallout 1 & 2 work perfectly. I can even use the installer on the cd-rom rather than the old manual install process.

Max your main characters agility (more action points) and give him high perception (greatly extends his gun range and accuracy). Make sure you have enough Str. to wear power armor too. Any talent that gives you free action points is great as well or free shots. A sniper guy with a ton of movement points who hardly ever misses owns in Fallout. Man I almost wanna install again. All 3 are great.

Gonna assume you mean Wasteland, cause BoS sucked

edit: In case anyone is interested, here's some screenshots from the original Fallout 3 before it was cancelled Damn, no attatchments today.

He's referring to Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, which was a really good game, sort of a cross between Fallout 2 and Jagged Alliance 2.

The piece of shit Fallout game was just called Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, and was for consoles only. It used the same engine that Interplay made to gay up Baldur's Gate (Dark Alliance) for consoles too. That's the game which used to get you banned on NMA for simply mentioning it favorably.

Yeah, I know. I thought it was terrible though.

Far more Jagged Alliance RTS, than Fallout 2 though, and buggy as all hell until the patches. /shrug. Glad some people liked it though.

Well, if you tried to play it in real-time mode I can understand why you didn't like the game. The first thing I did after installing it was set it to turn-based squad mode and I never looked at that setting again. In turn-based mode it played exactly like FO2, except that you had full control over all your people. Hell, I wish there was a way to play FO and FO2 in that engine, I've tried to go back and replay them since playing Tactics and just can't deal with the 'single character / NPCs are retards' factor of the original games no matter how much I like the story.

Fallout Tactics was exactly the same, the only difference is that once you started a mission in Tactics you couldnt leave until you were done. Virtually no difference otherwise.

Ahh man real-time mode was great for trivial fights. Once you got the APC you could drive around the desert running over shit while your squad fired sniper rifles out the port-holes. Great way to rack up some extra XP. But yeah for tough missions turn-based was virtually required because 1 screwup and one of your guys was dead.
