Ive been wanting to pick up some turn based games and was wondering what you guy have been playing and what are the best games in this genre.

Im kinda looking for new stuff im not really into buying 4 year old games. Any opinions would be great .

TBS games are my favorite genre, and I despise RTS games (RTS is an oxymoron imo) so I can probably help out here.

For squad TBS, try Silent Storm and Silent Storm Sentinels. Sentinels improved a lot on the original game but hard to find in the US because they haven't released it or the gold pack in the US yet. Hammer and Sickle is the next game in the series by the same company (Nival). It's already out in Russia, and should be out in English in November. Same goes for another of their games using the same engine, Nightwatch. It's based on the books/movie of the same name, and is just waiting for an English translation now. And if you were really into the X-Com games of the early 90's but think the new ones suck, you may want to check out Laser Squad Nemesis. It's by the original X-Com: UFO creators.

And a warning: do not under any circumstances consider buying Paradise Cracked or any other game developed by MistLand. As much as Nival makes the Russian game developers look great, MistLand drags them right back down. Sadly, these asshats have the rights to make Jagged Alliance and Disciples games now.

Nival is also working on Heroes of Might and Magic V. If you liked the older HoMM games, try Disciples II Gold Edition. Warlords is a great series too, but I haven't played the latest one (IV). Avoid the Battlecry ones though, they are RTS (and are pretty weak).

For more large-scale games, I'd recommend Galactic Civilizations. I can't think of any other really good ones released in the last few years offhand. :/

If you'd like a good RPG that's 100% turn-based, try Temple of Elemental Evil. Troika did by far the best adaptation of D&D rules so far, but the module itself is a little lacking. You can find it for $10 or less now though (try to get the box version and not the one that comes in a jewelcase only, there's less issues with patching the boxed one). Just make sure you patch only the first two Atari patches and then get the unofficial patch from the Circle of Eight website.

And finally, if you decide to check out older games, you can't go wrong with Jagged Alliance 2, Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel (not to be confused with the utter piece of shit console game with a very similar title), HoMM 3, Warlords 3, etc.

Unless you like the hex-map board game style stuff, there's not much to go with in the WWII genre. World at War uses a Risk-style map and is supposed to be pretty good. For ground-level combat, there really hasn't been anything since Close Combat III that I know of. Too bad the company behind those games got bought out and on the license is being used to make shitty FPS and RTS games instead.

If you like strategy, you need to play Combat Missions. It's kinda turn based, without some of the frustrating limitations of turn based games. Basicaly you give orders to your troops for the next minute and when you are done the computer computes and you see what happens during the minute. It plays a lot on moral (low ranked troops get scared easily and don't follow orders) and identification (there is no fog of war, but you don't see enemy troops if there is not someone to see or hear them and the level of identification varries).

I am not really into strategy, but my strategy freaks friends only swear by that game. Try it I guess, unless you are allergic to WWII or can't stand 3D that is not top notch.

God, I made the mistake of installing Civ3 a few weeks ago. I don't know what the hell I was thinking, but let's just say that I lost more than a little sleep to that stupidly addictive game.

I must not purchase Civ 4. I must not purchase Civ 4. I must not purchase Civ 4.

Civ4 is done under the watch of Sid Meier, yes. He won back the brand name. The only Civ's not made under his watch are the two Call To Power ones.

Should try the two Etherlords games by Nival if you like TBS games and M:tG.

JA2 was excellent, but forget about JA3D and JA3. They're being developed by MistLand South, a company which has yet to make a game which doesn't suck tremendous amounts of ass. Paradise Cracked and Cops 2170: The Power of Law were two of the worst TBS games ever made, and now these retards have been contracted by Strategy First to make the new JA titles, and Disciples III. Sad times for the TBS genre.

Civ 4 definitely looks interesting. I hope it's a lot better than Civ 3; I always felt that game was a step backwards from Civ 2.
