| They need to change that right hand setup so that it... 1) conforms to my hand better 2) somehow straps directly to my hand, so that my thumb doesn't have to hold it and push buttons at the same time. Although that current implementation is flawed IMO, the more I look at it and think about its concepts, the more I am convinced that Nintendo has really stumbled on to something. *If they gave the cord more slack, we would have a plethora of new viable sitting/lounging options for console gaming. | I know it's taking a lot of heat with the type of crowd that reads these boards, but i'll add that i think it's perfect. I liken it to the DS, in that it has tons of potential, and will succeed or fail based on how developers will use it. So far, the DS has been fucking awesome for me. As for your question, some developer will either find an innovative way of making a fighting game with that, or you can use your gamecube controller (the system supports GC controllers). There will also be several other expansions other than that analog stick, some of which i'm sure will come with the game if the developer makes it necessary to use to play the game. |

Also, imagine playing FPS, RTS, sports, and shooting games with that. The fighting genre is the only one that i think will suffer. edit: http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/09..._flashtop_read to read about how it works. Last edited by Schar : 09-16-2005 at 09:06 PM.

Looks pretty shitty to me, honestly. I dunno, I guess I'd have to try it to pass final judgement but going by looks and how I imagine it would feel in my hand, I don't like it. Also, here is a better place than any to say, N64's controller wasn't really "bad" but what really pissed me off about it was the analog stick and it's lack of grip. Compare the surface of a Nintendo analog stick to that of a Sony analog stick and I just don't see how you can possibly say that the Nintendo one is better. I specifically remember (after long Goldeneye sessions) my thumb slipping off the stick over and over because of sweat/body oil/whatever. The rubber (or whatever it is) padding on a PS controller makes so much sense. Anyway, I'd have to try it to be 100% sure, but the controller pictured doesn't look too appealing to me, at all.

Agreed. I can't imagine playing a computer game with my tv remote, sorry. It might make for good racing game control, where all you have to do is wave it around...but I bought a console to play fighting games: consoles do do those better than PC games. Even for an RTS game I don't think it's well suited. RTS games make you click...click a LOT in some developer's cases. Sit down and try to hammer the same button on your tv control for an hour straight and see how fun it becomes. Of course, it they make it so I swing my remote around like it's a sword hilt then k. I'll totally know how to pwn a medieval knight if ever put into that situation. Somehow I imagine they won't fully utilize that aspect. Only that big fat middle button could possibly be within comfortable reach of my thumb. I have big man hands and I like the xbox controller because my hands don't get brutal cramps in them from playing too long or just too hard (fuck those pussies who got wrist cramps just holding it. there are such things as wrist muscle exercises to make you capable of holding a nicely contoured adult-sized controller). Playing with that remote looks like I'd be taking a monumental step back into the 1980s with a tiny painful square box. Last edited by Iannis : 09-16-2005 at 09:40 PM.

Yeah, I am a mouse/keyboard purist to the extreme but even I can admit that if there is one genre of game that the console owns over the PC, it is the fighting game. And I'm just not seeing how this controller is fighting game friendly at all. Honestly, I'm not seeing how this is ANY-game friendly. Maybe racing games, maybe. But RTS, FPS, Platform, 3rd person, even basic menu driven RPG games are hindered by the oblong thumb reach this thing demands. I'm just not seeing it.

I'm pretty happy with what Nintendo is doing with this controller. Certainly much better than another generic PS/Xbox controller... do we really need three systems that are more or less exactly the same? Maybe they only have a handful of games that work really well with it and the rest are the same... I'll take that. I guarantee the new Mario game will take full advantage of it and make it worthwhile. As far as fighting games and other genres, they're coming out with an "add on" that will allow you to plug the remote into a GameCube style controller. This will allow you to play games like you would on the generic PS/XBox controller, while still allowing the possibility of motion sensitivity. 3rd party ports could really use this on their games to differentiate them on the Revolution. Here's an IGN mockup of what the add on will look like with the remote plugged into it: Last edited by foddon : 09-16-2005 at 11:16 PM.
