X box 360 price announcement

MS officially announced the price for their upcoming next gen gaming console. It will be sold in 2 different variations. The X box 360 Premium Edition for $399.00 and the X box Core for $299.00. Full details at Team Xbox. I was expecting more but the $399.00 price mark is not too bad for me. With 2 games and the system, I'm looking at roughly $550.00 or so.

Until I see titles that blow my mind, I can't imagine blowing $500+ on a new console. I have high hopes for Project Offset, Spore, Age of Empires 3, among other PC titles. $550 would net me all 3 titles with ~$370 left in my pocket... until I spend it on hookers and caffeine.

Wonder if Sony is going to release the price for the PS3 now... if they can set it a little lower, more people might wait. Then again, I wonder if it's even possible to price those consoles lower. Looking at the specs of the PS3, their GPU alone would be worth more than $500 if it were for the PC.

On the up side I might get free shipping

Ugh, both those packages suck ass. If I got one it'd end up being Core + HD (20GB, is that supposed to be a joke?) + VGA cable. Wireless controller? No thanks. Xbox [Anti-Modding Package] Live? Fuck no. Their initial line up definitely doesn't impress nearly enough to warrant that kind of money.

And I doubt Sony will lower their price because of the xbox, and even if they did their release is like 8 months after the xbox and it will have had a couple price drops of its own by then. I'm sure Sony is counting on rampant fanboi-ism for initial sales more than anything else.

Wow, I read so quickly through that list, I thought it was 200gb. I take it, they're not going to offer new games for direct download?

Also the wireless controler only has a battery live of 30hrs, wonder how long the PS3 pad can go. I'd hate having to replace batteries once a week, but wired controllers suck even more. (and I believe the PS3 is going to have wireless only?)

The latest issue of PC Gamer had a small article about how despite the hubub surrounding the new consoles coming out, that PC games were the ones taking away all the awards. In fact, I believe they said not a single console game was nominated for Best of Show.

Anyhoo, I ain't paying $400 to be able to play my old games. I'll just wait until they drop the price for when the PS3 comes out. If they drop the price.

Nominated by what hack magazine, internet site, or television station? I think that may have been partially due to most of those awards having criteria like "the game must be playable in order to be nominated" in which case not too many next-gen console games met standards.

But I was at E3 and I'm more of a PC person so I'm not even sure why I'm defending the next-gen consoles at all. There were some cool looking games for Xbox 360 there though, such as Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, Gears of War, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, UT2007, and Quake 4. Not all superb or anything, but some stuff that will be awesome, some stuff that will be amusing, some stuff that will suck.

That's part of the reason I never bought the original XBox. All their "killer app" games of interest were basically going to come out on the PC as well. The only game that semi-tempted me was Conker (one of the best n64 games hehe) and Ninja Gaiden.

The price is far too high. Microsoft has the headstart...they need to use this time to get as high an installed base as possible. With such a high pricetag (not to mention they are saying the games will be $60..hi2u licensing fees?), a very large amount of people will wait. And by waiting, the launch date of systems like PS3 gets closer and closer...

I don't really get the "Let's have an optional hard drive to be sure no game actualy uses it" logic though.

Just fyi: the hdd is required for backwards compatability.

And it's dumb as fuck to get the $299 version, since the hdd alone is 99 bucks more.

And Cadrid, your logic is so bad. If you include getting a brand new high-end computer in your math, the consoles are the better purchase.

Yeah, but most people have a computer anyway is the logic (although then again, you wouldn't have to really maintain that computer if you didn't use it for games, shit up until recently we had a PII-233 at the office and it was great).

And yeah, the cheaper version is stupid. Even for the HD cables, they eat up half the difference in price. Cheesey they aren't included in the base version, considering 720p was one of their main marketing focuses.

I'd bet good money that within a couple months of release, you will be able to purchase some sort of adapter or kit online that would let you use any store-bought external HD with the XBOX 360. Now it may not be completely legal(I'm sure Microsoft will probably try to shut down the sites as fast as they pop up), but people will be able to get it if they want.

Yeah, the cheaper version is mainly going to be bought by parents and people who don't really game (but omg I <3 m4dd3n). A lot of people are thinking that the $299 version is just so MS can claim that they are launching an affordable sub-$300 system while PS3 is going to be $399+.

But I still think it's unfair to argue that using a computer you already own is cheaper than getting an Xbox360. It would be like arguing that a Mustang is better since it only costs $30 to fill up the tank, whereas it costs $65k+ to get a brand new Corvette. It's like comparing apples and oranges.

And just derailing the thread a bit: can anyone recommend a good LCD TV? I think I want 720p minimum, and it has to be pretty cheap (I'm a poor college student). There was a nice Philips 30" I saw for $799, but I can't find it now.
