Dragon Quest (Warrior) VIII

It's lame to say this, but:

Discuss.

Can't wait and combat visuals seem good. <3

Looks good. The hero is too bland, reminds me of like 10 other "heros" from random games.

I'm slightly lost on the appeal of the series. I loathed the first, second, and tolerated the third, though it was a similar monster bash without as many inane control problems. Recently played the 6th for about an 4 hours and wasn't drawn in either. Too many random encounters, takes forever to level up, story is sluggish with uninteresting, generic characters.

While in the end most rpgs are just random encounter fests, I just found this series (at least the games that I have played) excessively so, and not much else. I'll likely rent 8 anyway just to see if I can get interested.

Everytime i see the hero, i just see Goku with different hair...and a bandana on his head. Especially in the trailer when they all "transform". And yes i saw that the same guy did the character designs; i just can't help but see it.

I enjoyed DQI, but it is true I played it on emulator with 600% speed (300% when shopping or doing boss fights).

That said, I can't recomend enough the DQV remake that was made for PS2. I played it from start to finish which is something I have not done in a RPG since.... probably Legend of Dragoon on Playstation...

I started playing DQVIII, but I did not insist much (mostly because there was no story faq on gamefaqs at the time). It's very polished and the scale of the environement (smae scale for indoor outdoor and villages, hills that mask the visibility etc) makes it sound like a single player MMORPG (or a rpg version of Ocarina of Time or something). It's still random battles from nowhere, but it seems there are "named" mobs that roams around, are visible, a little tougher and drop loot...

For the little I played one thing is sure though, it still gives this adventurous feeling of exploring the world with a bunch of friends and a wagon. That will prolly remain cool forever.

I played through this when it came out near the end of last year in Japan. It was pretty good, but it is just more of the same Dragon Quest. Most of the sounds from the series haven't even changed. Combat is as slow as ever with no flashy effects, however the view actually switches out to third person this time so you can see your characters' attacks. The graphics are really good for a PS2 game and the seamless world almost feels like an MMORPG. They really put a lot of effort into the detail of this game. The story is very Dragon Quest like with not much of anything exciting going on.

If you're looking for a good orthodox RPG with no surprises or innovation then check this one out. I personally enjoyed the graphics, but with such a bland storyline and combat I had to really force myself to play through it to the end. Of course this is pretty much how all Dragon Quests have been so if you're a fan then check it out!

dee dee do...dee dee do do dee dee..VREE BUDDADUM BADDADUM...
or something like that. Dragon Quest is great because it remains oldschool, unlike the Final Fantasy line that insists on reinventing magic and gear systems every game.

The last one I played took a long time to beat. That's why I like DQ. It was the one where your island was the only one that had been protected by God, and you travelled through time to fuck up the demon king's minions and reintegrate the world...yeah. Wandering around trying to figure out wtf to do next sometimes. I like games where I wonder what i'm supposed to go do.

slight derail but WHEN THE FUCK ARE THEY GONNA MAKE A SEQUEL TO LOD??!

I hope you can get the FFXII demo another way besides buying DQVIII. The DQ demo is pretty meh.

Chances are extremely low. As I understand it they just lost too much money on it. They tried to make a FF style RPG with super high production value, but they just weren't as good and had to spend too much money to get a product that wasn't up to snuff. The gameplay (battle system esp) was interesting, but the music was inappropriate, the graphics merely mediocre, and the storyline horribly cliche (in the bad way).

DQ8 is a mixed bag. They are "updating" a lot of stuff for the NA released which kinda kills the old school charm that makes fans like it. Hopefully they can find that good middle ground.

It looks a lot prettier, is not nearly as long as DW7 (for good or ill), but it's still DQ gameplay at it's core.

For those that care the reason they are finally called it Dragon Quest here is because the company that held the Dragon Quest copyright in America for so long finally let it run out.

LoD was shit. I felt more like a Power Ranger playing LoD than some legendary dragoon warrior. Story was shit too.

I like the DW series - my only complaint is the simplistic battle system... not really much depth, which I guess is what must be so appealing to some about the series.
