Your favorite game recommendations

Since I couldn't find a thread where we specifically talk about game recommendations (no not the indie games thread), I made this one. Just post about a game(s) you thought was really awesome and shit and why it was awesome.

First, I'm go with...Super Mario Rpg:Legend of the seven stars for the super NES. If you've never played it, you're missing out. I love this game, and if I could only have 1 game forever it would be this one. It's not the most in depth RPG ever, nor is it that hard. But it was a lot of fun. Basically you start off with Mario fighting Bowser, then some guy from another world named Smithy takes over by dropping that huge sword(Exor i think) into his castle, and invading it. Then from there you get other people to join your party and you go fight..Classic mario enemies and others from Smithy.

The leveling simple is easy: You level up, and get a bonus to either your health magic or power. The fighting is easy to figure out, and the game is fresh and clean. What I mean by that is that there isn't a whole lot going on and it's easy to figure out what's what. It's hands down the funnest rpg for the super nes, with a lasting time of about 8-12 hours. Yeah it might seem a little kiddy to a 18+ year old, but it's nostalgia really.

Now the 2nd/3rd game I recommend if you've never played it, Baldurs gate 1 and 2. These are by far some of the best RPG's out to date, on ANY platform, ever. Basically in Baldurs gate 1, it's the DND universe, and you are being raised in a place called candlekeep, when a secret is revealed and you have to leave suddenly. Your mentor is killed and...Im sure you can figure out the rest. It's a real time RPG, but you can pause it and plan out your attacks, don't worry. It's got an indepth storyline, excellent features and I'd say 20+ hours of gameplay if you've never played before. An all around excellent oldschool RPG.

Now, Baldurs gate 2...It's everything baldurs gate 1 was but like 3 times as good. It's basically the same game gameplay wise, except with higher levels, more spells, and the usual sequel features. The story is very indepth and very well defined, it's very challenging if you don't know what to do, and easily has 40+ hours of gameplay(if you dont know exactly what to do.)

Here are some screenshots...

And links to reviews by IGN.

Sorry, couldn't find a SMRPG link cuz it's so old.

Oddworld : Abe's Oddyssey and Oddworld : Abe's Exoddus both are masterpieces.

Then Oddworld Inhabitants, the company that developped the two aforementionned works of art, was bought by Microsoft and the sequel on X-Box sucked.

ICO and Beyond Good and Evil are both underrated and largely unknown games too that are both totally awesome also.

Although the whole series is pretty much great (ignore the First-Person Shooters), Resident Evil 4 is probably one of the very best games released in the last decade. And that's not exaggeration; it's long, moderately difficult, with a very nice story, solid characters, excellent gameplay and nearly endless replay value.

Goldeneye 007 was also incredibly fun with amazing gameplay with a lot of replay value from the sheer fun of shooting enemies in the ass and watching them suffer on the ground for ten minutes.

I'll second Resident Evil 4.

Metroid: Prime is one of my favourite games ever. I haven't played the sequel yet.

Bubble Bobble for NES will also always have a special place in my heart. 100 levels if memory serves me right, generally fun, and very difficult.

ICO is definately an underrated game

Went to go check out Super Mario RPG on ebay....looks like its gonna cost about 30 bucks after shipping....ouch....

Syphon Filter for PSX was an amazing game, although pretty popular so you most know about it.

Underrated racing game that is loads of fun -- Crash Team Racing. Check it out.

Damn I forgot about Resident Evil 4. It's the best gamecube game, hands down. Absolutely awesome. The interior castle rooms with the reflecting pools were incredibly well designed.

Deus Ex. The first one, not Deus Ex 2: Invisble War.

Planescape: Torment - Best RPG ever. Those who disagree either a) never played it, or b) are just plain wrong. Console RPG stories are straight up pathetic compared to this game. If someone could take PS:T and make it into a total conversion type mod for the Icewind Dale 2 engine, or better yet Temple of Elemental Evil, I would weep with joy.

Fallout 2 - A close runner-up to PS:T. Great story, and I actually prefer the pure turn-based action to the way the Infinity engine works, but the clunkiness of the way your NPC party members work makes the game a bit less fun to play. If FO2 worked like FO:Tactics, then it would probably be my #1 pick.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - My favorite RPG/FPS hybrid, and my favorite game of all time. Yes, I'm heavily biased towards this game, and I realize it was essentially a buggy piece of shit out of the box. I still loved the buggy version, and really no one can fault the patched game too much. I just like the vampire shit, so much more so than normal fantasy or sci-fi, but LARP'er fags are just too scary so I never really had much interest in actually playing the White Wolf games. It does, however, make a perfect computer game as far as my tastes are concerned.

Deus Ex / System Shock 2 - Tied for runner-up here. I think SS2 had the better mechanics, but I liked Deus Ex's story a lot more. They both blow away any FPS released in the last 5 years (other than VTMB), and I really don't understand why having games with some depth has become a taboo in the industry. Are there just so many ADD kiddies in the market now that we have to simplify everything as much as possible?

Is it possible to patch BG to display a larger resolution than the old 640x480?

If Zul G sucks, I Might be needing something to fill an evening or two, but I couldn't stand that resolution these days, let alone on a 19"

So many, I can't really tell. By Genre makes it a lot easier

Civilization Genre:
Civilization

FPS:
Doom

RPG:
BG 1

RTS:
SC/BW

Simulation:
Wing Commanders

Adventure:
Tomb Raider 1 and 2

Action:
GTA games

I wish that the mod team who had been dedicated to updating PS:T hadn't of fallen apart. Pitiably they claimed to have lost their work in a massive hardware failure (code for "holy SHIT this is hard, and we're not being paid").

I always like to nominate the original Icewind Dale in with BG1. I thought ID1 was actually better than BG1, although Heart of Winter xpac was pretty slack. I'm not sure where you could find Trials of the Luremaster anymore...that had a CRAZY final fight. It was like: OK, you've beaten every test in the castle. Now fight them all again SIMULATENOUSLY.

I'll let Vorph's comments slide as long as he admits he was on drugs and had a memory lapse. While Planescape: Torment is hands down the best computer RPG ever, Xenogears is far superior.

Xenogears is the greatest game of all time, and anyone who says otherwise should be kicked in the jimmy repeatedly.

Greatest game of all time? Please, its more like Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

But Deus Ex IMO is the best RPG ever. SS2 comes a close second but the god damn respawning of monsters and breaking of the guns pissed me off.

OoT is good, but it's no Xenogears. Don't make me put you in a cage, heathen. The holy name shall not be defiled.
