+10 Internets | Newsflash: a game that is short and easy can be good.

Beyond Good and Evil was about 8 hours too but it's a great game and terrific storyline (too bad the game was so badly underrated that it made almost no money and so the sequel will likely never be made) =( Max Payne was about 4 or 5 hours and was excellent too. However, it's a shame these "short" games are sold for the same price as other, much longer games. The only exception I know of was Beyond Good and Evil which was sold around $20 because it was short.

Personally, I miss the old days of truly epic-length games like Baldur's Gate 2. Say what you want about quality, but time has its own way of working magic that short games can never capture.

+61 Internets | One of the main benefits of short games is that you don't get tired of the gameplay, because once you get past the first stage, it's pretty much just repetative anyways. I just hate games that are like 3 hours of gameplay, but advertise as 100+ because 90% of it is cutscenes and dialogue. Square games are getting worse with each passing year in this category. You might as well be watching a bad movie that makes you feel awful for eating hamburgers with a boss battle every 20 minutes. |

| Sure it can be good but something that separates the ICOs of the world from the GTA and Civs is that the innovation comes in graphical slickness and setting rather than longevity and/or replayability. I don't mind games that are short once you know everything in this genre - but I don't see the tradeoff between tech impressiveness and length of the game. God of War is a good example of what being patient about the game ends up with when you toss in a variety of things... the Prince of Persia 3D series is the same. Not my cup of tea in general... but when games like Metal Arms can be marginally innovative *and* offer 40+ hours of playing to get through it I think they could tack on 2 or 3 hours to ICO without it being fluff. |

| I'd rather have 6-8 hours of tight enjoyable gameplay, instead of 6-8 hours of tight enjoyable gameplay, padded in with 40 hours of fluff and repetative time-sinks. Its not to say that long games cant be good, I loved BGII and it took me ages to finish it, but that game was quality top to bottom and with alot of replay value also, its one of the few games that I actually went out to buy after downloading it because I enjoyed it that much. But, short games can be good also, and aslong as the gameplay is fun during that time, I dont see what the problem is. Likewise, I hate it when good games get cut short, I really enjoyed Fable (although it was rather simplistic in alot of ways, but still enjoyable), just as the game felt like it was starting to peak and get into it - next thing you know, I'm infront of the final boss and a big "wtf? its over now?" |
