All you have to do to view the movie is "register" with them, which just requires a fake email. It places a cookie, so you don't need to check your email and confirm and all that, just type in an address and go for it.

Will Wright and Peter Molyneux are quite similar in that respect, as evidenced by say, Black and White or even the Sims (or Fable). All got good to excellent reviews, one is obviously the most ridiculously successful game of all time, but none are that great IMO (especially Black and White, never played Sims much so can't comment, Fable didn't even come close to living up to it's original billing and design). Not sure if that explanation helped at all. Again, I like Will Wright's games. I have ever since I first played SimCity on the SNES (faked many an illness to stay home from elementary school and play it). But sometimes there's just a bit to much reverence for him, and sometimes it seems he's caught up in his own myth. I haven't followed Spore at all, but the whole "start as bacteria, then eventually conquer the Universe" schtick just sounds too far out there to even be close to a realistic goal with fleshed out gameplay through the whole arc.

I like to have opponents in my game, other races, other factions, other planets that I'm up against and that give me the drive to better my camp and to eventually beat them. I'm worried that at one point I'll have these couple planets and this neat terraforming vessel and I'll ask myself ".. so what?". Sure I'll have some Star Trek minigames to play, and if I'm bored with my tripod race I can start again with amphibians who have eyes at the end of their legs and move around by sliding upside down on their cranium, but all the "minigame" parts of the game will have to be complex and fun enough to make me want to play them again and not tell myself "okay, I've got my city, now I'm gonna make a couple tanks and .. yep, there, world conquered, moving on to my spaceship". The different evolution engines and mechanisms rock my world and are the most groundbreaking things I've seen in a videogame since real time rendered 3D, but they don't make a game .. or at least, they don't make a game that's worth playing over and over again. The game does look amazing though, so I'm really holding my breath and hoping that he can pull this out, if he does I'll gladly let him pee in my eyes.

+2 Internets | This project is as ambitious as it is unappealing. The Sims' miracle happened because it reached a big population of players that were previously not interested in video games. The Sims interested them because of the social aspect, it's like your own little reality show. These Sims players will not be interested in Spore and I seriously doubt a whole bunch of people outside the tiny market of gamers who love sandbox games will be interested.

Look at games like StarCraft, Neverwinter Nights, all Sim (The Sims, Sim City, Sim Theme Park, etc.) games, emulated MMOs... there are many people who absolutely love playing games where they can be the guy in charge, or make their own content, or toy around with things like "If I make the coaster's rail too short, what then? *Kaboom*". You have to be out of your mind to think that Spore won't sell incredibly well. Last edited by Cadrid : 08-17-2005 at 03:07 PM.

+2 Internets | Sandbox games, so you can remove StarCraft and Neverwinter Nights from the equation. You can also remove The Sims from the equation for the reason I mentioned above. Sim City, Railroad Tycoon or Theme Hospital are certainly successful, but Spore is more like Sim Earth or/and Sim Life on sterroid. Two games that certainly did not went down in history as great commercial successes. The problem is that the budget of Spore is prolly a hundred times (if not a thousand times) the one of an early 90s game like Sim Earth. I guess you can interest more people through huge buzz and marketing though. After all, Black & White sold close to 2 million copies. How many will still be there to buy Black & White 2 remains to be seen though. That will be an interesting test.
