What do you want in a mmorpg?

I'm just curious on what kind of mmorpg you would like to see if its up to you to decide the next big mmorpg. Would it follow in books you might have read? Dark Elf Trillogy for example. What kind of races would you like? Goblins, dwarfs, wood elves, dark elves, trents, goblins, half giants, minotaurs, humans, evil dwarfs, ogres, trolls, halflings, pecks, blah blah blah. Go into as much detail as you like even as far as sharing specific stats and special moves for your race or character if you want. Should it follow a main story line, tons of mini quests or both? Should end game content be 1 big group mob or a war pitting each person against there own mob? Share your ideas because I'm interested to hear them. Rickshaw if need be but I would like some feedback. *my post as of now is onesided but futuristic ideas are welcome also, I just prefer the sword and magic aspect *

Post-apocalyptic Fallout/Wasteland based world. Purely skill based advancement. Story-based goals consisting of survival and struggle for resources among various groups going into rebuilding if resources are good enough, finding technologies from the past and incorporating them into the relatively low tech present, and adventuring into fallout contaminated/extremely dangerous areas in search of civilization, resources and technology.

Yeah...combat support for recon missions, tradeskillers to help rebuild, survival specialists to get large groups of people through dangerous territory, scientists types to study technology and recreate it. Unlimited variety of beasties due to "random mutations". World changes based on how successful the "server" as a whole is in gaining resources and how they distribute those resources...some cities decay further, others thrive and grow.

PvE with some concentual PvP that doesn't effect the game...much like EQ. Only one race: human...although HIGHLY customizable in appearance, stats and overall abilities (again playing the mutations card).

Something like that

Undead ninjas with laserblades plz.

I'm kind of burnt-out on fantasy right now, I think. Either a futuristic game (such as a Fallout MMO), or something like City of Heroes where you get to don some tights and fight crime with fists, claws, and big blue energy blasts through your palm.

The only fantasy MMO I would really think would blow me away is something like Warhammer, or a Sigil-based game (the planar city of D&D, not Brad's new company!) Just because you can make whatever the fuck you want and connect it to the City of Doors.

More seriously, it would be an interesting change of pace to make a MMORPG that is not built around heroes and dragon slaying and wars, but around political influences, underworld, corruption, robberies, espionage, double agents, etc... think Thief (PC game) + Nightprowler (PnP RPG) + maybe Vagrant Story (A-RPG).

A medieval fantasy urban MMORPG... tough to design content but I am sure some clever tools, some clever ideas and a game design that remembers the key social aspects of a game like EQ without reproducing the same game structure could be pretty amazing.

A combat system with a reliance on skill rather than time played.

Ok great so far it seems there needs to be a Fallout Online. What about races though, should it really be just humans? What about fallout tactics with all of there races? Better yet, could we some how impliment a system that EQ used for only 2 days where you could be randomly selected to a mob and control it. Maybe go a little further as to say if you like the mob, mutant we'll say, you can go as far as to change its appearence, starting stats, and use as your own character. This could somehow in the long run work with race clashes, or if people are mature enough, races helping each other out to cover for the others weaknesses. Or, maybe everyone should start as human but you have the ability to transform yourself. Example, mutant-go hang out near some radioactive material for a long time, Cyborg-get loads and loads of machine enhancement transplants till your not human anymore, Night crawlers-only come out when its dark to hunt for your prey *skin turns pasty white and nightvision* exc. Should Fallout follow the game in respects that you have the ability to kill anybody on whim? *would be fun* Everyone elses ideas have been good to and I'm not counting them out. I just want to see where this goes since the majority thinks there should be a Fallout Online.

I wonder if the MMORPG genre is going to suffer a tremendous hit in popularity and newness of the idea fade?

Remember when Doom came out, and there were billions of clones, all with little add ons to make it seem interesting but nothing to make them different... Or when Command and Conquer was big and there were tons of half-ass RTS going around...

Will the MMOG genre truly endure as it is now, or will it suffer the fate's of FPS and RTS games, where only a few titles a year can have industry-wide success?

These two are tied together, in all cases...skill is tied to time invested.

Sounds like to me is you want a situation where something easy rewards people who spend less time.
