| just another computer question I am building a new computer with about a 3000 dollar budget and was wondering if it is better to buy two 120 gigabyte hard drives in a raid0 configuration or a single 200 gigabyte hard drive. Is the 2 hard drive set up really worth the extra cost as far as performance goes. I've never owned a 2 hard drive set up before but to my understanding the object of the raid0 configuration is to speed up data throughput. Any comments or opinions from people who have experience with this configuration are appreciated, and please nobody come on here and say "hey fuxor the point of the raid config is to give you one giant sized drive that is really 2 drives". |

| Be warned, if one drive dies you lose everything with raid 0. If you run raid 5, you'd need 3 drives, and would only get 2/3 of that space, but it takes a hell of a lot to kill a raid 5 array. Three grand seems like a huge budget to me, are you buying some giant shitty lcd monitor or something? http://www.storagereview.com/map/lm.cgi/raid Storagereview is your one stop shop for all things hard drive. | Umm, yeah, no shit, hehe Reason I asked if it was a graphics pc is because topoftheline workstation cards hit 1500$ (Quadro-Something 2000FX or something like that, check newegg). I would kill for that card. Instead I will have to settle for a Quadro4 750XGL for my box ^_^ Edit: Just noticed, but try and get an ASUS mobo or something as opposed to an offbrand like Gigabyte. |

| isnt there 10,000 rpm hard drives now? i mean if you want a 120 gid hd, im guessing here but i bet the access time is slower, but thats my guess, i havent followed hard drives in a while. i still think its crazy they can fit a 200 gig hd into the space of a old 500 meg hd lol. |

| first of all... I would spend decent money on a NICE 21" monitor. I've had mine for the last 2 computers and this NEC still runs strong. I find a decent monitor greatly enhances long term enjoyment of a system more so than an easily upgradable motherboard/chip.

| oh yeah... skip the ATA and go for scsi raid if you want to really burn some money. I find my multitasking performance on multiple tasks accessing the drive such as mp3 playing, game playing, downloading, etc. at the same time is much smoother with my old scsi drive than my "faster" ATA setup.

| I have to agree with everyone else here. Why are you spending $3000, wtf are you trying to build? $1000 gets you a nice gaming machine, $2000 gets you an absolute top of the line machine. SCSI drives are impractical unless you REALLY want to burn up money. A raid 0 will give you better performance for sure, but like was stated above, if one drive dies, you lose all your data. Save yourself some money, I would find it hard to build a computer that costs $3000. |
