Radeon

Is it true that Radeons still suck at rendering EQ? I thought it was normal to get lag running through sucklin by myself. Does anyone have any personal comparisons between ATI and nvidia?

EDIT: specs, sorry. 1800 XP+, 512 MB of DDR, radeon 8500. Luclin models off, dynamic lights off. with 0 clip plane, I still get a bit of lag in the bazaar.

Bought a new comp with a 9700 pro about two months ago, and it runs like a dream in EQ. I have all models on, clipping plane at max, all texture and graphic settings at highest quality, and can still run around the bazaar with minimal slowdown. In normal playing situations, even crowds of 50+, it's smooth as butter.

I was always a big NVidia fan, but I'm quite pleased with this card.

Yep, I finally switched over also

ATI is just dominating right now, they give you much more for less

conversly

i run using a g4 ti 4200 and run with every model ON, dynamic lighting on, names on, spell effects on (~35% translucency)and have zero frame rate problems - except the bazaar where i pull the clip plane in about halfway to get smooth framerate.

i also play swg with most settings at about 75% of max with ~25-40fps everywhere

big framerate booster - believe it or not - is sound in eq, turning off sound is a decent boost to performance.

I get awful performance in eq and great performance in everything else on my radeon. Even SWG runs better than EQ

Honestly it runs like my old 1ghz gf2 did.

xp 2400, 512 pc3200 ram, radeon 9500 pro overclocked to over 9700 speeds.

I get 14000 in 3dmark02 (i know, means little) but half models in eq on a raid = hella slow down looking at them)

I run EQWindows, that might be why though

i decided long ago that eq isn't really a good judge of vid cards.

Some people's perception of framerate differs from others. But take it from someone that plays first-person-shooters and NEEDS to have high framerate (at least 40FPS), my experience is that the Radeons are slower than GF4s in raid scenarios. I use to own a Radeon 9500 Pro and switched to a GF4 Ti4200 due to the choppyness on 50+ man raids. It's possible that ATI has resolved this issue because it was obvious just a driver optimization problem. However, about 3 months ago this wasn't the case.

Running a Radeon 9700 Pro and a Geforce TI 4200(way overclocked too) side by side, CPU and RAM are almost the same and from a side by side comparison, its pretty its clear the Radeon is faster in everything that i've tried(War3, EQ, Raven Shield, NWN). Not only faster on raids but I can run through PoTranq with clipping maxed out and its still smooth as silk, the Geforce starts to get choppy at this point.

I basically run my Geforce at "Max Performance" setting instead of going for higher quality because I cant stand it otherwise after using the radeon. Video card makes a huge, huge difference in terms of 2 boxing on the same PC also, Radeon handles it a lot better than the Geforce4 4200 also.

I used to hate ATI after using a Rage Pro Turbo for awhile, I avoided their cards like the plague for the last few years but the driver/compatibility problems are a thing of the past.

Threads like these are pointless without using fraps. Some people think 10 fps is fine.

Heres a rather obvious idea: Lets decide on a view angle in some zone, without anyone in the shot, run fraps, and compare actual numbers.

Pentium4 3.06 mhz computer, 533 fsb, 1024 megs of 288 sd double speed ram, and
  • Nvidia GeForce4 4200 TI

All options are on, all models, all effects, clipping plane maxed out, and all names.

Every single zone with the exception of Bazaar is smooth as silk regardless of occupation by player models or mobs. Plane of Tranquility is smooth, Nexus is smooth, Every raid I've been in has been smooth.

Only Bazaar gets choppy, and the choppiness is proportional to the number of Traders that are in view. When I look up at the ceiling, and see only the heads of the Traders, and the booths (so I know where I am going) then its also smooth as silk.

BTW: I zone faster than anyone else. I timed a succor zoning in PoD at 15 seconds. I can usually start zoning a few seconds after someone else does, and get there a full 10 or 15 seconds sooner than they do. Only very few people zone almost as fast as I do.

My gaming box atm is an athlon 2400+ on an nforce 2 (abit NF7) with pc 3200 (winbond). It is currently running aircooled and stable at 215x10.5. I am running an overclocked radeon 9700 pro. I can run pretty much any time with all the models on and at highest quality settings. The only thing I have turned off is the spell effects cause it gives me a fucking head ache. ( If youve seen on fucking sparkle effect youve seen em all....)

That's an understatement. My roomate said America's Army ran "just fine" on his P4 1.2/Radeon. I looked at the veritable slideshow on his screen and told him to turn on stat fps. He was getting a shitbox 20-ish fps with drops into the teens. To me 60fps is "just fine" and anything less is increasing levels of crappy.

About 7 months ago, when the 9700 pro came out I did some serious benchmarking alongside my old geforce 4200ti and posted the results on graffe.com. I used Fraps in game and did control tests with several other games to establish that my hardware was properly working and that the ATI was very much dominant in those games in all situations. My rig is a p4 2.53, 1gb 3200 ddr, 80gb hd, audigy soundcard on a cable connection running winxp.

On average I found that the ATI card seemed to have problems rendering the SoL models and in the bazaar I would get around 8 fps with approx 300 people from a set of 4 angles and controlled pans I used in the test. The Geforce was getting 12fps in the same angles, with the same settings. Now, when I did my texture rendering tests and panned a view over serveral areas including from the Tower of the Twilight Sea the ATI absolutely destroyed the Geforce and when I turned on AAx8, ASFx16, the ATI was plugging away like a champ and sitting near 40fps. The geforce in the same scenarious with max settings was worse than a slideshow getting like 2 fps.

I don't know what it is about the SoL models but they ATI cards really seem to have problems rendering them efficiently. Maybe it's different now with the Catlyst 3.4 drivers but this game sucks and I don't play it anymore so you'll have to test that yourself. =p
