Question for the old OLD timers

I will preface the question: I quit game 3 years ago. The last tough mob I dealt with was Trak, when very few servers were taking him down.

The question:

Aside from your FA, has any reward this game sees fit to produce EVER been more exciting than your first FBSS or Jboots (Or perhaps that very very first Ice Comet scroll)? Please be as honest as possible.

As for me, the whistling fist robe was incredible (absolute max haste when combined with a mundane haste item), but holy shit did they nerf that thing straight to Hades.

Everything else I've read about since then just seems like the same fucking carrot, with a 5% increase per quarter.

The greatest item I've ever recieved in EQ was my old Warrior's first Ykesha, back when the Ghoul Lord was a two(three if you sucked!) group mob.

uh

You honestly prized your Yak over your Flowing Black Silk Sash?

Are you "on the pot"?

It might sound stupid. But when I got my screaming mace it was the first real quest I completed. I felt like i really accomplished something. Thats the kind of feeling that gets people to continue playing these games. The coolness factor of that stupid proc hooked me on this game.

I'm sorry. I have a different view than you. I am obviously a retard and shall soon be featured as a winner at the Darwin Awards.

And yes, I did enjoy my ykesha more than my sash. Why? Because I never had a flowing black silk sash. My first haste item was a Cloak of Flames shortly after Kunark came out. Fucking idiot.

EASY

Easy there hombre, this question was directed to old-timers. Becuase you answered, and you were discussing Guk loot, I (erroneously) assumed you obtained your FBSS, as pretty much everyone knew at that time, you wanted one or all of four items from Guk:

FBSS
SMR
Yak
Mith 2 hander

Calling me a fucking idiot for reaching the question I had, plus a little humor, is....pedestrian. I'm glad you got a CoF, I had to settle for a Rakusha (and despite my 3 years abscence, the char still wears it).

I would have to say my Paw of Oppola. It took me severl days strait of camping, giving up, then putting in a few more days to get it, but when I finally got it, it felt great.

Getting Jboots in Najena was a blast..... Those 28 hours were a very weird gaming experience to say at least. That and reaching level 50 were my most memorable moments in EQ.

There are a lot of "ties" for me. My first PGT still compares to my epic and that too compares to my first "real dragon loot" (Crys spear).

Honestly, nothing since the epic has really gotten the blood flowing quite as well. An Ifir might have done so I suppose but I left the field of battle long before that was very likely.

I would agree with the implied premise here, marginal improvements are certainly less fun. On the other hand, the encounters themselves became pretty interesting, or at least firsts were. The very first AoW kill I was a part of was far more fun (gratifying?) than anything that came prior, as an example. It certainly was never all about the personal loot, I got off more on making the guild better than anything else.

cheers,

I agree with this. Damn gold ring.

Finally completing my epic was also quite rewarding, especially considering it was broken for months and months.

I spent most of my time trading, and pissing off a lot of the people who actually worked hard for items. Having a COF and never even going to Lavastorm (let alone solusek) can make people jealous, espically since items like that were rarely traded. I had every commonly traded droppable item memorized, stats, weight, classes used, slot, price. On a good day, I could make from anywhere between 5-15k profit. (The more wealth you have, the faster you earn wealth in relationship to the average player. Buying a CoF for 200kpp and then selling it for 215kpp.) I didn't have any friends in game, since I was changing characters often to mask my identity. Someone who I underpaid from an item is less likely to deal with me in the future, hence, changing characters is the only logical option. I made the decision to start levelling my warrior up, searching for how the average gamer experienced fun in EQ.

A month later I finally got my warrior to level 40+ and I decided to see what it's like camping an item. Of course, I picked the FBSS. I didnt even need or want it for its physical value.

Not being the kind of person to quit, I camped the FBSS for 36 hours strait, and saw many go to druids who had only been grouped with us for less than half an hour and didnt even know what a FBSS was. This was back when there were 20 people waiting in line for frenzy, at least.

Finally, the frenzy spawned, and I died in the chaotic battle in the wee hours of the morning. My group members, knowing I'd been pushed to near insanity but wasnt even about to quit, let me have the FBSS on his corpse after the rez.

It felt really empty and stupid, which sums up the game rather nicely. The mystery and scaryness of guk was gone, I'd seen every corner of the dungeon. Likewise, i had seen everything the game had to offer, yet only continued to play out of some kind of compulsion. Everquest must be what it's like being a nihilist: believing in nothing, yet fullfilling ones existance because it's the only reality known to oneself.

Rubicite

Rubicite Breastplate!

I don't think any item I got after that ( and I played in an uber guild until I quit in POP ) gave me as much satisfaction.

Dual wielding a Crystalline spear and a Vexthorne. Even if that filthy little assling had one tenth the style of my combat rolling dwarf rogue.

Oh, and having a PGT at level 19. That thing will always be uber.

Bone Bladed Claymore before people figured out how to disarm exploit to get the Zweihander

BBC was so fucking elite back when no sword had that type of damage on it... it pains me that even the crappiest of the crap you can buy for 5 plat in the bazaar probably owns the BBC.
