What happened in EQ to make it all click for you?

I totally know that feeling. I did that once with Lobber, and he was alot higher level than you at the time. Around 40'ish. For some reason some green con's decided to aggro, and suddenly, I was swarmed with aggro from every goblin and his cousin. I didn't start to get worried until I realized that I didn't remember the way out and my hit points were beginning to show a real beating. Like you, I also found myself in the gorge, heart pounding, vowing never to return without serious backup. Or serious levelage and equipment upgrades.

I remeber around halloween time (I think 2000 or 1999) they were hosting special events in all sorts of zones. They had Nro, east Karana, Lake of ill omen, guk, MM, etc... all sorts of places... the loot was ok... most (and probably all) was no drop, and there were fun bosses always around. if you had a slot that had a bad item, then these events were your thing....

Anyways, I was a young bard (level 20ish) and decided to try EK first.... I found this giant eye dude who hit for 700ish damage.... 2 hits of that and I was dead in an instant with an insane CR...

So after a 4 hour CR, I was really pissed, so I went to Nro with a friend... almost everything was green to me there... except every hour something special happend.... an event called the Feast of something started.

This big snake appeared next to the docks.... I sat there for HOURS and HOURS just camping him.. sometimes I would get exp, smoetimes I wouldnt... I got to help lots of newbies.. and get lots of trade skill supplies...

So after about 3 days in Nro, I decided to move on back to exp... I leveled up to level 30 and headed to EK with 2 friends.... guess who is there again? its that giant eye that killed me... this time, there are many many people there... we started whacking at it for a while... all 3 of us died (luckily another cleric rezzed us) so we went around killlin stuff.

I get ot level 35 in 3 days... I go back to the eye... this time, we win.. all 3 of us live, and we get the exp... There was a wierd shoulder itme.... it WASNT no drop, and it was really good (about Thurg arms stat wise) I loved them.. every time I got bored of EQ, I'd just cast identify on my arms and get the message

"The Halloween ghosts have inspired you to become a great adventurer"

I still got those shoulders... dont know the name off hand (I dont wear them ever... They clicked it for me.
