| Particle effects on armor possible? Stressing that I'm happy with the dyeing thing (I'll never dye my Emp robe, thx), I still feel that high end armor should have particle effects. How difficult is that to program? Or is it impossible with the present engine?

| well if weapons can have particle effects i dont see how hard it would be to have armor with them...its possible. But then again i wouldnt like to run around with a full suit that emits pink particles and shit. But, gauntlets with a fire effect would own. |

| I Don't See Why Not The only issue is how much lag your machine is willing to bear. Get 50 players together with multiple effects going will bring most clients to their knees. Beyond the tech part I don't see why not. Technically weapons are just like any other visable parts of armor. Its little graphical touches that go a long way to making a game fun to look at. And as long as they allow clients to control the level of effects I'm all for adding fun stuff like this. On a side note: one thing that has always bugged me is that spell effects aren't apparent enough. For instance if a spell effect says "Your hands glow blue" then why don't my hands glow blue? |

+1 Internets | I dont know for sure, but im fairly confident that armor is just a wrap around texture. It's probably very possible. but just saying its not as easy as [utting it on a weapon which is allready a 3d entity. On second thought, it would be very easy to make a ripple effect in clothing, but the actual geometry cannot be changed AFAIK. |

| Armor is only a wrap around texture on old models, on the new models armor works different.I won't even try to explain why cause I don't have the terminology in my vocabulary old models were wrap around textures from the start, and even the Velious armor textures are wrap around but with nice textures but new model armor is more realistic..I'd assume it would be possible to add particle effects to armor ...shrouded in flame anyone? |

| all textures are done the same way on old and new models, the geometry however is not. Particles on weapons are built around the geometry, on armor it would be unlikely unless VI started creating new armor looks (such as the breastplate Seru displays) with particles built in. Of course this would also mean the particles would only show up if players had new models on, since those are the only models that are designed to layer different pieces of geometry. Without really knowing the insides of Everquest, I won't say it's impossible, just unlikely.. Last edited by Fawy : 02-27-2003 at 10:20 AM. |

+43 Internets | Just think at the possibilities. Then think about what SoE would actually do: Brown particles floating out the back of pants. Yellow particles coming out the front of pants. Little black particles around a helmet that would look like flies. Sure if you worshipped Bertox this would be a good effect but how many people do?

| Yeah, i'd have to agree. It is possible, just not a very good idea. Why? Verant should say fuck you to new graphics until they make the current ones run without having fucking evil lag. My machine don't exactly suck, i mean it isn't fucking top of thel ine or anything but it doesn't suck, and if i have more then like a 10% far clip plane in PoV and other PoP zones i skip around like a fag with taurette's syndrome playing hop-scotch. It's goddamned annoying. Hell, having leggings of fiery might be burning would be goddamend cool, but for fucks flying sake, there's enough goddamned lag. They must streamline their graphics before making them more complex.

| "The monk epic is, basically, armor with a particle effect." With simple testing you would realize that if the particle effect was a part of the fist armor slot, then the particles would still show up when wielding a primary and secondary weapon. The fact that they do not, means the monk epic particles are actually in the weapons slots built around invisible geometry. So essentially when wielding the monk epic, you are filling the fist slot, primary slot and secondary weapon slots graphic wise. (which is also why you can still have particles on 1 fist while wielding a weapon in the other). |
