OK I'm a dumbass have a question

Haveing a prob hit 60 not long ago and starting up on the whole (need to have saves and hp cause I'm a Ranger shtick). Problem is this I cant seem to get a straight forward answer on what Save vs. Magic is for. I get the others but Magic is a lill' off. Is it a default for spell lines that dont fall under normal cold, fire, dis lines or what? Should I try to get it up before more specifide saves or does it have a completly different use all together. ATM in mostly pre VT/SSRA gear, would post magelo but my link isnt working. Thanks for the one none bash reply I might get lucky and get.

Spells save versus certain, well, saves. An example:

----

Caustic Mist
Classes:
None
Description:
2: Decrease Hitpoints by 500 per tick

Details: Raw spell data
Spell Type: Detrimental
Skill: Innate
Mana: 0 Target
Type: PB AE
Casting Time:
Instant Duration: 1 ticks @L1 to 4 ticks @L8
Recast Time: 24
Resist: Disease (-300)
Fizzle Time: 0.00
Range to target: 0
AE Radius: 60
Interruptable: Yes
Location: Any
Time of Day: Any

Messages:
Other cast: Soandso spits a glowing mist.
Cast on you: Your skin begins to rot.
Cast on other: Soandso 's flesh begins to liquefy.
Effect Fades: Your skin regains its solidity.

----
For this spell you'd want high (VERY high) disease resists to save versus the spell (resist it). Same goes for magic, but in the spell data, it'd have Resist: Magic ( xxx ). High MR is helpful when fighting, for example, Aerin Dar with his nasty AoE.

HP > resists...

um, HP > ac...

HP > stats...

HP > looks...

HP > yo mamma...

right, I think that just about covers it

You MIGHT choose some resist gear in specific fights, but on the whole that entire concept went out the window in late Velious. Resists go up overall as gear improves, and you don't want to wear much -sv gear, but other than that, you get far more mileage from developing your hp than anything else, armor-wise.

HP > resists...

Running around 340 resist in BoT, fucking giants throwing Monsoon. HIT! HIT! HIT! FUCK YOU! Check Graffe's for how unhappy wizards are on their LURE rain spell, and here a gimp no resist adjust rain spell is hitting me, who is red con to these fucking giants, every wave. Gear is a) HP, b) STA, c) effect, d) mana, e) who cares.

You might encounter mobs that have special abilities like charm, slow or whatnot, which you might assume is save vs. MR or DR etc. But once you discover the ever-useful lucy.fnord.net site, you might find yourself assuming it is the wrong resist for that particular mob (cursed charm is DR, and not MR for example).

I guess it stems from the pre-Velious era where fear and charm was almost (?) always MR, and you basically knew what type of resist gear to bring to the encounter.

while ppl are askin stupid questions... I got one of my own.

The thought came up tonight on whether or not active (or even not active if it had to open a log and calculate... may not be real time but could still be usefull) DPS per fight could be displayed in a UI....

any thoughts?

(edit - its late and I cant spell for shit)

Its not possible to display that in a UI.

You could play EQ windowed and run a real time log parser in the background though...
