Part of the problem with calling everything from 24 to 72 character groups all "raids" is that they are very different. 24 man raids requires everyone to be on their toes, 54 to 72 does NOT. EQ has tried to compensate for that with shit like raider_17 you must click x now or the raid wipes but it still sucks. I think anything over 36 is ridiculous for the usual raid, I would rather do 10 to 25 the way WoW does it just so each person is actually important for what their class can do, not just expecting them to pay attention enough to perform some trick like take off your boots or the raid gets dt'ed. On the other side I really think MMO's should incorporate a few encounters that are biweekly or monthly spawns in the common world everyone can access that require 100 to 300 players working together for a truly epic fight. That was how I always envisioned dragon raids were supposed to be, something that an entire server had to work together to beat in some remote and difficult to get to location. That kind of stuff builds community and loot could just be 1 item for everyone or some ability boost for everyone, titles, whatever... Maybe there's an extra slot after you win the epic raid. Say there's 10 guilds on a server and the top 7 have beaten all of the current expansion and those 7 are working together to down the big epic raid encounter. Those 7 guilds may be motivated to help the other 3 guilds finish the expansion to help win the epic encounters, promotes community... All kinds of possibilities with this kind of thing. Just seems like there isn't enough "wow" factor in games anymore at beating things. Oh we beat the latest expansion... /yawn. Where's my loots?

But if they're in it for another long haul, then the potential for something more is equally high. Only time will tell. But one thing is for sure, you'll know which it really is long before its ever even beta'd. If SOE is smart, thier swerve as long and wide as they can from WoW, and from thier own EverQuest for that matter, and go with something completely different, but laced with EQs familiarity. A WoW clone will net them little. An updated version of original EQ will net them even less. They need something somewhat fresh and new. And it needs to be easily accessible to the masses, without necessity of extensive upgrade.
