Trademarks are not just a "computer game industry" thing. I'm actually surprised you honestly didn't know what they were :P

Thanks for the link

As for "trademark" yes, I know/knew that means ownership of sorts, so no one else can use it/claim it...some even tried this in the past with ... Soon(tm)

Two new trademarks for Everquest showed up today.
The way it was posted I wasnt sure if there was a unlining meaning is all, many of the FH regulars seem to know things before any others. I guess its normal for someone to be keeping tabs on what gets Trademarked in games and posting about it.

I just worded my question wrong, made me look stupid...oh well wont be the last time.

Let's just leave it at that.

With the length of time require for MMO game development, I can't afford to get too excited about EQ-X. Hopefully I'll feel differently in two or three years.

2-3 years on EQ expansions? You are confusing EQ with WoW.

I can guarantee the EQ2 xpac will hit sometime around November. They hit every year like clockwork.

Is it the secret kingdom of the Ratonga? Where they'd never reveal?

I actually love the lore much more in the Warcraft franchise than Everquest. While I will always have a soft spot for Tunare...WoW lore has so many more badass and awesome notable characters (Malfurion & Illidan, Sylvannas, Tyrande, Grom Hellscream...I could go on) and a richer storyline.

Anyway, The Hole rocks.

Till you go back, play it for 10 minutes and then realize why everyone bailed on it when WoW was released. EQ is just a memory now, and to go back just sullies what great time those memories were.

Yeah the stories in WoW are typically a lot more engaging when it's something that doesn't involve picking up elephant dung or killing twenty of this expansion's -loc creature.

I found the lore behind the original game, Kunark and Velious to be really good, but beyond that it kind of turned into "whatever we can cook up to give people loot."

Seeds of Destruction did a decent job of returning to a more story-driven expansion, but EverQuest's quest system is so dated that it turns into you reading a novel just to progress through the content.

I'd agree that WoW's lore is better. EQ lore was often incredibly spotty, never explained, or just not there. Obviously you've got your flubs in WoW (Sargeras, Demon Shaman Goats from Space, etc.,) but it's consistently more available, enjoyable and, well, consistent.

I still find EQ lore interesting, but for me the fact it's been handed off and down shows.

WoW lore is technically a lot better, more cohesive, easier to follow, more narrative, etc. Its very 'professional'. (if you choose to ignore lolspacegoats).

But all of that being said, the opposite being true of EQ's lore adds significantly to its charm. The difficulty in obtaining lore makes each shred more valuable. Everquest in the old days was about 'the wonder'. The giant monster in lake wrath. Hidden zones. Undiscovered content. The lore lent itself to that, little tantalizing glimpses into the backstory, that left the community to fill in the holes and speculate. There's very little room for that in WoW.

Everquest was a lousy game. But a pretty fantastic adventure.

How much lore do we have about the middle ages, romans, greeks beyond a few key pieces and stories? How much of our current material is so distorted by wars, disasters and outright fabrication?

EQ lore always struck me as being more realistic than WoWs because it was so distorted. It felt more like it was something handed down through word of mouth and fragments of manuscripts that had some how survived a few wars with the gods and dragons.

Then again, I played EQ for a while and never knew any of the lore past the stuff in the manual. So fragmenting lore can have its disadvantages.
