| I don't buy the "the game world is designed around no jumping" argument. Seems like the opposite in FFXI, where there are an abundance of 1ft ledges that prevent you from accessing terrain. If they want to funnel players through the content, I hope they implement more realistic barriers this time. I hate being funneled either way, but I would be able to tolerate it as long as the barriers would realistically stop me in real life. For 1ft ledges, they should just implement a stepping up animation or some form of automatic jumping/climbing, like in the latest Zelda games.

| No, the people who jump all the time for no reason piss me off. Like I said, I jump when it saves me time - such as jumping over a ditch instead of walking around it. Sounds like you didn't understand my post... because you have ADD?

+31 Internets | Yeah, WoW does put some use to jumping, but in general its a bit few and far between to have an actual need to jump. No one mentioned Wailing Caverns. I liked that little ledge hop. Great opportunity to mock the stupid housewife healer who came from EQ but never played ten minutes of Super Mario Brothers...and thus failed. Really though, it is in fact simply the game design. The complaint about jumping just mirrors the UI complaints. It took many MMO'ers out of their comfort zone and made you learn something new about a part of the game you believe should be "intuitive" and familiar. EQ handled like Doom, WoW handles like a more modern FPS. FFXI felt more awkward with WASD and/or mouse movement, and there was no row of numbered hotkeys. You either had to learn a different UI paradigm or just buy a damn controller already and stop complaining! |

+31 Internets | Its more like a step sideways to me, but I spent years on consoles from Atari 2600 to PS2 until I finally started doing more PC gaming. Given how the console vs. PC gaming market has turned out in the years since, you could very well make the argument that they were actually forward thinking. The first company who can really get a grand slam homeun with a console MMO might make Blizzard's money hats look like small potatoes in comparison. |

+166 Internets | For one, it's a psychological thing. Anybody who has played JRPG's has had that experience where your path is 'blocked' by a boulder you could easily just fucking walk around or climb over and you go on this inane sidequest complete with "Lolgoofyjapan!" characters. Not that jumping prevents those kinds of shenanigans. Even with the ability to jump JRPG's still finds ways to annoy the piss out of me with that horseshit. I'm looking at you Rogue Galaxy. Then again, western RPG's tend to cockblock you with a far more insulting obstacle. The wooden door. But yeah, jumping is just a hallmark of freedom and really pushes that 3D world on you. |
