SOE's Free Realms

I'm going to start a thread on Free Realms, y'all are going to flame the shit out of me for it, and then when it comes out you'll be trying it out and actually enjoying it.

www.freerealms.com

Free Realms is now in closed beta, so anyone who has signed up should be getting their invite soon.

Why it's cool?
  • Because you might have kids that would enjoy it
  • Because *you* will probably actually enjoy it
  • Because it's free-to-play (with a subscription upsell as well)
  • Because it has a pretty badass card game
  • Job system that allows you to switch your class
  • Most of the standard MMO features like grouping, questing, loot, stats, equipment, pets, etc.
  • It could be on the Station Pass (not sure about that) so you might get a membership for free if you play other SOE games.

If I sound like a shill, yeah, this time I am. My significant other is a systems designer on the game and I want to see it do well. It's time for a big free-to-play mainstream MMO to come out of a traditional AAA U.S. studio. Plus, it rocks. So there's my disclaimer to get it out of the way.

Sign up for the beta at least. I think you all will be pleasantly surprised.

What do you mean by free-to-play with a subscription upsell? Sorry, just don't understand... Looks cool though

This looks like they tried to overlay WoW graphics on EQ1 graphics. Has a weird look.

I kept hearing it has WoW graphics and plays in your browser window.

You can play for free for as long as you want. There will be optional subscription only features as well, for $4.99/month.

Leviothan - It doesn't play in the browser, it is a standalone Windows-only client for now.

Is there a huge download for this or is it relatively small? Currently out of the country and I need something free to play to tide me over till I get back in four months. I played Runescape one day for about an hour and realized it is horrible so I am looking for something else to fill my gaming urge.

Been playing this a while now, not sure how I feel about it so never made a thread. Class switch on the fly is pretty cool but have to pay to be able to play as the OP classes and everyone that is playing for free is the fucking ninja.

Though with a description that is the class...er job of Postman(yes you can play as a fucking mailman) I can see why. Kart drivers are a close second for free players, I got one named Ricer haha.

FYI there's an NDA and I'm not advocating breaking it. I would advise against it.

Also, it's closed beta, not open. So you can sign up today but you have to wait until you're invited for access.

Given the pricing and subscription structure, looks like Sony has lowered its sights from taking on Warcraft to taking on Runescape.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's lowering sights. Taking Runescape's subscription model and adding the ease-of-play of Free Realms could very well be right up there with WoW, and I'm comfortable being quoted on that. Not to mention an in-world card game with a retail presence. They're in a good spot.

It sounds like you're just trying to be snide, but there's a kernel of goodness there.

The more game companies that quit trying to beat WoW and instead focus on their niche market, the better for all of us.

I'm sorry but I always said Fuck NDA agreements, talking about the game is how you get people interested. It isn't like I am selling the info just saying what my opinion is. Besides everything I said you can find on thier website that you linked anyhow.

You're right on both counts Ninen. I was being snide, but it is nice to see a major studio putting actual effort into something other than trying to copy/topple Blizzard. I was immediately reminded of Runescape because it does well for itself despite having numerous features that supposedly 'can't' work in today's market (for example, equipment loss upon death). That's a game that I've long wanted to see the major studios pay some respect to.
