Just to be clear, cause I don't use it - the Curse client and this other mentioned WoWMatrix client...these are simply programs that auto updates addons when updates are available for lazy people who can't download them on their own?

Just trying to figure out what exactly it is, and why people use it. Thanks.

Yep, that's all they do - auto update your addons. You'd be amazed at how much engineering, development time and expense it required to bring the Curse Client to market - in addition to the bandwidth costs.

If you're talking about getting the unable to validate game version message then it probably means that you tied your account information to battle.net. They havent finished updating the battle.net account servers for 3.1. It should be finished around 1pm pst when the patching is completed.

Edit.. Looks like they delayed servers up till 1pm pst.

Believe me these updater programs can be a massive time saver depending on the number of addons you are using. I have used Wowmatrix for quite sometime, I had previously used curse and did not like it at all. I guess we don't have many options available to us now so I'll give the curse one another shot.

Back on topic, queuing up for a battle ground from anywhere in the world was long over due, it may even encourage me to PvP

I would also like to add that at no point has the Curse Client distributed a virus. Nearly 1.2 million people have installed the Curse Client. If it was distributing a virus, the outcry would be insane.
Glad to hear it, I wish I had known about that before. I will give it another shot then.

I'm not asking for a reach around or even a happy ending here, but it would be nice if I got a little service with a fucking smile some time.

It's not uncommon to have 70-100+ addons/libraries installed, and it just takes care of it all for you. I do not miss the days of EQ UI updates.

It's a lazy way to keep them updated, and therefore very appropriate for today's MMO players

A heaping shit?
  • We offered the first centralized addon web site, Curse.com.
  • We offered the first addon author-centric communities, WowAce and CurseForge.
  • We offered the first addon updaters, the WowAce Updater and the Curse Client.
  • We offered the first Age of Conan and WAR databases.
  • We operate Warhammer Alliance, World of Raids, Arena Junkies, Aion Source, and now RunesDB.com.

Everyone at Curse works their asses off to offer useful products and services to the community.

If by preventing WowMatrix from stealing our bandwidth we're taking a heaping shit, then I am gonna need some more toilet paper...

It's interesting that you guys found a technical approach to block them, even if it will probably only be temporary. I'm surprised that you haven't sent lawyers after WoWMatrix yet because of the bandwidth they're stealing.

I personally don't trust any of the autoupdaters and just do manual downloads every now and then, luckily I don't use too many mods.

They are located in an area of the world where legal action would be useless.

The technical solution we implemented to block them won't be a temporary inconvenience for them. It's engineered in such a way that if they found a workaround, we could re-block them within a few minutes. Patching their client at that frequency would be unsustainable for them.
