Speaking of EQMac; The sleeper is still sleeping on that server.

Who wants to be dicks, level a raid force, and wake it?

It would be great if EQ lowered their price. I think the biggest problem is the fact that it's not worth, comparatively, what other games today are worth. I think most people would love to have an EQ subscription just to goof around with on the side. I really like the EQMac idea or rerolling on a new server but honestly, I don't have the time to devote to it seriously mainly because I play WAR in my spare time. I'm sure many are in the same situation with WoW or other MMO's. It's not anything against EQ but, that time is gone and unless they pull out a Classic or something extremely creative, they are not going to gain their old (or a large/new) playerbase. EQ is just maintaining. I want to say surviving but they are way beyond that point. EQ is just there, a fixture, and I think it's time, they look at making EQ what it truly is, and that is a great game that once was, and begin looking to the future with an EQ3.

I would really like to see EQ3 hit a home run and give the option to choose a free sub between EQ1 or 2 just for nostalgia and good measure.

Anyone know how well EQ would run on a new MacBook?

Well based on the developer chat that took place tonight I think it's pretty much a guarantee they have decided on Progression, as if there was any debate.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
@Tamat - piggvomit asks: When you say Progression server in the poll, does that mean you will modify it for a timelocked progression server of possibly 6 months? or just regular combine rules again?

+RytanEQ - the progression server on the poll is basically the combine rule set. Although we are going to make an effort to remove the various areas of content that were out of place based on the geography vs. the progression step

+Prathun - Jaggedpine

+RytanEQ - the Freeport sewers for instance wouldn't be available till much later.

+RytanEQ - but yes it's basically the same as the combine server.

@Tamat - Dragonmonk asks: What will the new server be and will when it be released?

+RytanEQ - That's completely dependant on how the poll turns out. We don't have a specific date set, but I would TENTATIVELY guess at a month or two out.

I added the italics, and yes you could say that he was just stating that "if" the progression wins on the poll then they will remove the zones that aren't suppose to be there. But come on, honestly... that answer he just gave took more thought than the poll itself, and we all know SoE doesn't have that kind of creative juice to just throw away.

Again, you don't need to buy a Mac, you just have to be decent at "computers". Google "hackintosh".

It's harder to actually get an account active on the EQMac server than to get the game running.

Only started as of about a month and a half ago. Pretty lame, I know they don't spend any time on EQMac, but they should fix the subscription page.

I looked into hackintosh and it's pretty daunting and not noob friendly. I may actually buy a used Mac on ebay. The low low end systems are cheap, I'm just not sure how they'd perform. Supposedly some people run EQMac on systems with like 800mhz processors (if the forums are to believed). I have a hard time buying that though. Plus once you go dual core, it's hard to ever go back. I might just look for the cheapest used dual-core system I can find.

This should be an FoH goal for 2009, completely documented with screenshots and video.

Why is it hard to believe? I did it with a 600mhz computer until mid Luclin (granted everything on low). Hackintosh really isn't that hard, people here could walk you through it.

Freeing The Sleeper on EQMac would take 6 months minimum. I'd place wagers it couldn't be done in less. Like I was saying earlier, you forget how hard the game was.

Things you forget the most:

The need to time melee attacks and cast in between hits, good luck channeling shit until 40ish.

Losing to level 1's at level 1.

KoS starting mobs.

Having to sit after every mob.

1 minute scribe/memorize timers.

And it's all juicy! Too bad SoE doesn't just open Al'kabar to windows users and use it as a real progression type of server. Although, I seriously doubt many people would be committed enough to play it in its hardcore form.

Speaking of difficulty, I got it running again and messed around:

Epic battle with a rat, who is owning me:

Quick! Which zone is this?

Photobucket

Yey.

6 months what the hell? As a super casual Kunark character my enchanter hit 65 in PoP with - I believe - less than 20 days played. That was my first character above 30. With what we know now, a semi-hardcore schedule and set groups, I have no problems believing we could do that in less than 10 even in oldschool EQ. After that it's a matter of a month at most getting essential AAs and gearing up in PoP era gear.

Going in with a semi-hardcore mentality, I can see a guild waking the sleeper within 2 months. Going in Combine-hardcore, within a month no problem.

I'm gonna try to give the hackintosh thing a try, so far it seems you can run it through VMware and a preconfigured iso of Leopard, if it all works out of the box it should be easy enough

Like I said, you FORGET how difficult the game was. I simply cannot explain it, you must re-experience it to remember. I played the game at release and had more alts than anyone has a right to, and I'm still surprised whenever I log into EQMac from time to time. It would still take that 25 days played to get 65; which sounds about right, I started a Bard with Luclin and everyone said I level'd fast as fuck and I was 60 with 22 days /played, but I was moderately twinked... There is no way a group could all get to 65 without 20+ days played on every single character. Think about all the facets... no powerleveling, no twinking, no powered spells, etc, etc. Gear and aa's aren't even really a big deal, we're talking about Velious. Anyways, point is, you can't remember how hard it is until you are right back in it.

I'm saying that unless I grossly misremember things, I hit 65 as a newbie, non-twinked enchanter in less than 20 played. Hell, I want to say 16 days. That was with 1-45 done during Kunark/early Velious and 45-65 done during PoP - the exact era this server is based in, except I couldn't take advantage of the excellent luclin low level content.

I'm think you misremember the difficulty of the game in the PoP era.
