Then all your precious memories are gone ... GET it ??

Let EQ lie and die the good death it deserves.
And when your 85 and have all your grandkids around you can tell them about the good 'ole days of MMORPG noobness and the game that 'started' it all - EQ.

They'll think like we think today of someone who saw in concert Led Zep, or The Beatles, or Nirvana (which i did
I believe that what keeps drawing people to the idea of an EQ server with a fresh start and timelocked expansion release has more to do with the unique nature of MMOs in the gaming genre than wanting to recapture some idealized nostalgic vision.

If I want to go for a super optimized Final Fantasy Tactics run, I can do that. If I want to play through Kid Icarus or Mega Man 2 or Contra I've got the roms. Those are still good games and I'm happy they are around. I can try and beat my best times in Vigilante 8, run through Armored Core, go through Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past or Chrono Trigger or FF6. Hell, a few of those games have been re-released multiple times.

It isn't nostalgia that gets me playing them. Those are games that I like and sometimes want another crack at. "Ok, this time through FF6 I'm going to assign Espers carefully, develop stats carefully, and try and keep the uniqueness of the classes." 1st/2nd edition DnD has some real problems but I'd still be up for a game if someone was running it.

With Everquest I can't really do that. If I want to go and remake my level 5 Paladin and carve up the Qeynos newbie area I can't do that. Once they made 1-5 protected levels and once the a few expansions were out the low level PvP that I liked was not possible. Running around GFay in the newb grinder with low level caster was quite a bit of fun. I'd do that again for a while if I could but I cannot. I cannot go through ToV a few more times or try the AoW or do any of the lower level raid content.

If I want to back and beat up on Ruby Weapon my FF7 discs are in a binder under my dresser. I can make that shit happen. Hell, I just spent like 10 hours over three days carefully plotting out a Shadowrun character for a campaign that ended like 4 years ago. "Ok, if I was playing again I'd definitely want to try out the magic, probably Aspected as a Shamanist..."

That's what got me playing the Progression server the first time. If I actually wanted to go back and hit some familiar territory within the correct context I probably wouldn't get another chance. If the new server ends up with PvP I'll give it a try just so I can engage in some mindless killing knowing that I can't go back and play more like I can the other games on my shelf.

I hadn't played EQ for a few years when I resubscribed a year or so ago to join a "Progression Guild" on the Test Server. I had a blast; obviously not the exact way I had remembered it but it was still a lot of fun.

I want a new Everquest Server because I think that game is better than any MMO out right now, and that isn't just the nostalgia talking. For me EQ was very competitive, actually a challenge, and I enjoyed the community. I found all of those elements intact when I resubscribed a year ago; and I am certain I will find them again on a new server. I don't want to relive EQ the exact way that it was 8 or so years ago, I just want to play it again cause it was fun. I'm actually hoping there are some "custom rules" for the new server, something like Discord for example. The idea of a fresh server just adds to the competition, and that's always what I have been about.

This idea that Everquest actually sucks and people just remember it wrong is retarded. Some people just like the design and format of the game more than WoW or WAR or AoC or anything else out right now. I happen to be one of those people. I fully understand I will only play for a couple months before I get bored and quit, but those couple months will be more fun than I ever had in WAR and certainly more fun than I currently have in WoW; so STFU and let me enjoy my EQ.

reminds me of an awesome TV commercial we have here (we hardly have any), when the granddaughter tells about that awesome rock concert where she ruined her clothes dancing in the mud and grandmother replies she's also been at a rock concert in 67, Hendrix. But she didn't ruin her clothes, because she wasn't wearing any.

back on topic, wasting more thought on the subject when looking back the greatest "achievement" EQ was was that starting at level 10, you had already reached close-to-cap playing experience. I don't think anyone, not even Blizzard, will ever be able to repeat that. And that is just sad.

You're being a little over dramatic. Camping for an item wasn't a staple to your character and it certainly wasn't an achievement. At least, not once the next expansion came out. Then all of your "staples" fell the fuck out (it's called a play on words ass) as people had the item for themselves or they found a comparable/superior one in the newly released content. Two expansions later nobody gave a shit, not really anyway. Sure, there were a few exceptions, namely epic weapons which were one of the few items to still be coveted even when made obsolete. Shit like the FBSS... Yeah, I said it. The FBSS is shit and has been shit for years. How's that camping "achievement" and "staple of your character" feeling now?

I'm sure you may have some fond memories of group or zone chat, but I guarantee you've wiped the unpleasant memories, the 100s of times you killed the monster, the half-dozen times you lost the roll on the item to someone who joined the group that very morning, the KSes by another group, etc.
I get what ruination is saying..rather you do or not.

Daerath,
In the game you play now..
do you go stand in a corner of the zone awaiting the next expansion?
do you not go get the "hot item of the must have"? or do you know better things await you in the expansions to come in the future so you hunker down in that coner of the zone you picked so you dont waste your time on anything in this already (in your mind) trivial current game your playing...

dip shit, when this guy (or any of us back then) got his FBSS it WAS the thing to have (the Staple)...and he "has fond memories of attaining it..." Killing mobs 100s of times was not bad when you have a community around you, so forgetting the trudging path of dead mobs was very forgettable. I dont know any game now that gives this type of achievement.

go troll a non game forum.

If you're going to quote someone, it's helpful to quote something they actually wrote instead of making shit up.

While I agree that the community made the game's endless camping enjoyable, did you ever just go back to the same area to camp for the same item twice, just for the community? Fuck no. If you ever went back it was to get another to sell or to help out a friend who wanted the same item. You *NEVER* went back to camp Frenzy because of the community.

Hands down, Kelethin was best!

Friend of mine convinced me to come back for a bit. It has all changed though. The game is not what it once was. My friend even sponsored the account for a while and I really feel sorry that I couldn't continue. The game is just way too bad and feels really old. The best time I had came when they upgraded Guk and Blackburrow to level 70 zones. Once that ended, I couldn't hang on for much longer. It is very difficult to get a pickup group these days as there are not many casual players left.

Many people think back of Velious and want to come back. The problem is, the zones are empty and you know the content. There is nothing new, nothing unknown left. It is like watching the same movie for the 20th time. I'd rather explore Northrend than run through Velious just once again.

So, let me get this straight, when EQ was still actually good you were around 10-11 years old. My initial comments were really targetted at people who played the game all those years ago who still have strong feelings of nostalgia as opposed to some fist-typing brat who probably started playing long after Pok changed the game and who still thinks it's the greatest MMO ever.

As an edit, I think I'll remember the sounds of fighting old EQ skeletons for as long as I live, I spent so long killing them outside of Kaladim.

HEY CHIEF: I've been playing EQ for over 8 years. I have a great memory, and I was quick to cope with my surroundings online - I was never a "u" "ur" kiddie. I started playing with my dad and his friends (they got us into it) and after a short while I was the person they'd ask for prices or where the fuck to level or just about anything even though I played barely at all during the week (but hogged the hell out of it during the weekend with a couple friends), so I'd like to think I knew my shit, and I probably knew it a lot better than you did.
