| The Littlest Hobo of MMOs | EQ is glorious and rosy in hindsight but unless you've been living in a gaming vacuum since you quit it then returning to the game feels like stepping back into the steam age after you've become used to having electricity. While WoW and other MMOs may have spoiled us with mods and oodles of features most of my returns to EQ last less than a week because I can no longer face the clunky shit that is the game I quit nearly five years ago. |

Listen idiot, you can label this shit all you want but some people still enjoy playing the simplistic grind of EQ. Camping items? Sure it's tedious, but I don't regret a single time I ever did it. It was an achievement - not one of those pussy achievements in WoW that you get a fancy badge and "achievement points" or whatever. It was a fucking staple to your character, and the rest of your characters life. Just because you've "moved on" doesn't mean the rest of us still don't enjoy the time when the big condo building was an open green pasture. I'm willing to bet many of your returns to EQ last less than a week because you never even had the desire to play it again in the first place, much less learn adjust to the 'clunky' gameplay and other simple mechanics. I know a lot of us that played the first round of progression servers had a fucking blast, even if it was playing through the same zones on the same mobs, getting the same items, and defeating the same dragons as we were 8+ years ago. We were enjoying it. That's all that matters. I also want to highlight what Lyenae mentioned, the secret knowledge. That played a big part in the progression servers as well as classic EQ. There were some things not taken out - big deal, some people figured it out and exploited it to their advantage. Much like classic EQ. Except these things were new, and brought a renewed sense of secrecy to the game, if only lasting for a short while. Basically: SORRY I LIKE EQCLASSIC, I HATE WOW FUCK YOU BYE

+10 Internets | Eh, I enjoyed Progression more than any of the WoW clones I've played since then (AOC, WAR).. even with exploits, GM problems and macroquest considered. I think I enjoyed it more than EvE as well. Everyone has different tastes, I dunno why people think that just because the majority (11mil?) likes it one way means you're wrong if you want it another. I'm really looking forward to hearing which server is announced. |

Cant wait to see what the new server will be- hope its xfer locked I may resub just to start on it and have fun! :-) As for the camping items etc I am sure everyone who back in the day camped something rare has a big ol story behind it- an achivement- I can tell you the story of how I got my AoN, prenerf CoS - first peice of rubi etc- or I can tell you how I got my achivements in wow...ran in killed something- or ran around an area till i dinged.... My ideal server PvPTeams if any pvp- if not PVE *sorry guys!* Timelocked progression 3-4min per xpac- progression only happens if x y z type content has been cleared- so if by 3months PoA/F/H Nag/Vox have not been killed it awaits those things- I would say also to have each achivement dont 3x by 1 guild and atleast all 1x by another-- give some farm time before jumping into the next xpac relying on 1 equiped warrior etc.

The only answer to it is very long hard locks. If you leave it up to the players you will be in Velious in about 3 weeks.

Now honestly if they just did another round of server merges it might help the game a bit. | |

| I know this would never happen in a million years... But if SOE was smart (which, they arent) and wanted to make huge bank, they would do the following. 1.) Time Locked Progression every 3 months (except for EQ vanilla, make it last 6 weeks to Kunark). 3 Months of EQ Vanilla would be too long imo, not enough raid encounters. 2.) Give every new character some basic banded-level no drop gear. If any of you guys played the original progression server, then you'll know how hardcore it was trying to level naked. It wasn't a problem back when EQ released because we had nothing to compare it to. But in the days of easy WoW-era leveling, some kind of starter gear would make the first few levels much more fun, I think. 3.) Here's the most important thing: Tweak Raid Encounters. Go into every old raid encounter and change the encounter's "gimmick". For instance, instead of the traditional Naggy/Vox encounter that does simply fire/cold AE with fears etc...make them spawn adds, give her a heal, charm, whatever. Essentially, change up what players *think* they remember about the encounter and give them a reason to develop a new strategy for beating the boss. You do these things, especially #3, and you can fill 3 progression servers with nostalgia hungry motherfuckers. The added incentive of developing new strategies for beating old bosses would send people back to EQ in droves. If SOE could pull it off right, advertise this special type of server on Wowhead, Allakhazam, hell...even these boards, they could probably pull higher subs than the actual incarnation of EQ right now. But this is just a pipe dream. SOE isn't that inventive.
