Ghoulbane--definitely my favorite item/weapon from any of the swords/elves RPG's. It's the quintessential Paladin weapon.

P-51D Mustang: If vehicles from MMO flightsims count. That was my near-exclusive ride across a couple different MMOG's for the better part of a decade, starting in the mid 90's. I liked being able to hold my own against the odds--say, 5 or 6 vs 1--and that plane, flown well, let me do it effectively. Jesus, and to think some of the posters on this board might not even have been born yet when Air Warrior first came out (it was already an old game when I first started it).

Weapons: First druid epic or that monk staff with the kanji particles. I was just wowed by those particles :P

Item: Fungus covered scale tunic, favorite twink item. Jboots get a honorable mention...also Elder Spritist's Vambs...helped immensely with quad+ kiting in Overthere.

I never suffered for an item in WoW like I did EQ, for dozens of things. Or felt better when getting it. Camping something in my room on school nights, laying a towel over my keyboard so rents wouldn't hear the keys, getting ready to kill the monitor if I heard their door open. Those were the fucking days.

Weapon:

Anyone old school EQ remembers this, remembers what it could do, and what you were like if you got some form of haste going. When I quit in 2005, I gave it to a VERY old buddy/guildy, and in an email 6 months, he told me he still has it. He played until 2006-2007, and would get offers of 2 Million + gold all the time.

Item:

All time favorite EQ item, bar none. I hear about people having an easy camp, but I never did. Camping him for the full six hours, only to have someone next to you de-invis and smack him will make you punch holes in walls. So, fuck this guy:

I also felt pretty good when I got my Elysian Tunic, despite having to deal with being fucked over by the "Family Guild" I was in on rolls WAY too many times. Anyone that ever played on E'ci (now Tunare) may remember, but I never pass up an opportunity to say: Fuck you Gwanalla, Fuck you Radyn.

Honorable Mentions: Amulet of Nec...and the manastone, just because it may be the biggest item in the game in terms of history.

Everquest's itemization had definite influences from Dungeons and Dragons. In 1st and 2nd edition you could pick up an item that instantly transformed your character. The amount of possible power that could be gained by a mediocre Fighter from say, the Gauntlets of Ogre Power, was a night and day difference. The lack of level requirements in EQ combined with the rarity of gear in general is something that was really interesting but that I doubt we'll see again. Between the changes made over time to EQ, EQ2, WoW, Warhammer, and others, everyone is pretty much used to itemization being an additional degree of character customization that you enjoy from basically level 1 onward. We expect to see items with stats and procs and shit right away and to get to make choices.

Back to the Gauntlets of Ogre Power, items with that much potential also make balance much more difficult. The game basically has to accept that large swings in power can and will occur and so do the players. In EQ at different times some items were just considered mandatory and some items were the best of their slot for a particular level gap or the best period.

Also, fuck whoever decided Iksars couldn't use the JBB. I finally got one of those damn things on the Progression server as a Barbarian and that shit just isn't fair. I would love to play in a game that allowed for items like the JBB, Fungi Tunic, and Spear of Fate, but I just can't see that happening outside of a tabletop game.

Being a WoW rogue for a while, my favorite item was always the engineering frost reflector trinket; reason being that one could see a hunter drop a frost trap, pop the trinket, run into the trap, and watch the hunter get frozen.

Item: Grid armor from AO.

Weapon: Support beam, also from AO. Nothing like hitting people with a big freakin' I-beam.

Favorite item: Ragebringer. Shit was awesome.
My favorite item was probably that orb from Vex Thal that would summon bread for everyone in a huge radius. I had so much fun using that during raids, in the Bazaar...
Also, all the various illusion items EQ were great. I hate how WoW barely has any, and the ones it does have are usually a 5 minute use with a half hour or an hour reuse time. That's dumb.

I think you guys make some interesting points about the huge swings of power eq items could bring. I am trying hard to think of items from other MMO's but it's hard to recall many notables.

I feel like some of the more regimented and designed MMO's like WoW could deal with a little less balance and a little more fun in itemization. I would like to see stuff with weird and massive effects, things that really make your character feel unique.

Some other honorable mentions:

Weapons:
Bladestorm, Soul Leech, Tantor's Tusk (the reverse of moss covered twig), Tranquil Staff, Fungi Staff (Torpor yourself!), Polished Granite Tomahawk, the only other notable item I remember was some sort of flaming hammer I got in DaoC from Legion.

Items:
Pegasus Cloak, Rubicite BP.

Tough question, but I'd go with Mosquito Hide Boots/Blue Ceramic Band. Most people would consider them lackluster items, but they made charming so much better. With insta invis and damage, a good chanter didn't even need any other gear. I got offered ridiculous amounts of plat for those boots and just laughed... best 15k I ever spent, well, except for the 20p I spent on the band.

However, I really loved the concept of the gear that leveled with you. Too bad that didn't really go anywhere with it (or if it did, it was after I'd gone).

DAoC had some decent items in ToA.

Malice's Axe and Croc Tear Ring were both quite overpowered on my Skald. I think my favorite was Shades of Mist back when it shapeshifted you into a near-invisible ghost form, but that ended up getting nerfed.

Weapon: Gotta be the cleric epic. Camped that bastard ragefire for a week before he popped. I can't even imagine doing that sorta thing now.

Item: Going with the testament of vanear, remember getting that and being so happy - and not wanting to use the cgs when it dropped cause it had one less wisdom!

Someone stole my weapon that i thought of right off the bat, so i'll replace my pick of Tantor's Tusk (+ the all crit disc) with Truncheon of Doom, loved tanking with that thing... unless it didn't proc.

Favorite item by far was Incarnadine Breastplate. Warrior invis ftw.
