Well, WoW has a lot of fun items that aren't exactly must haves that affect game mechanics: Piccolo, Snowballs, Regular balls, the Timbermaw guardian, the tentacle from c'thun, MC Cap, etc.

EQ had many groundbreaking items that were again must haves and made the game entirely different if you had them: AoN, Prenerf COS, JBoots, Manastone, Pumice, heck, even Donal's BP prenerf was awesome for clerics.

And since it changed our view of the game so hard, and made the game differently, makes them top notch when remembering the best weapons/items.

Haha, and oh yea. It was so awesome for making sure the Druids actually put Ro's on the mob on raids.
Fucking druids always said they would assign someone to it and never did. We had to bitch about it every single day (on every single boss) to get mobs debuffed. I loved that staff.

I didn't get far into EQ either and never got any of the neat items. I did play EQ2 and found the heritage quests rather neat so I could technically have a version of the awesome items. Would have been neat to have the originals though.

1) Weapon. I couldn't find a picture of it but in SWG Pikemen could get an infinite proc polearm with mindfire on it. Hit the person enough and the proc would eat up all of their "mind" bar and you'd win. It was such a broken weapon and I got offers for it all the time since it was a random chance to find one.

2) Item. The freezing band from WoW with the 1% chance to proc. I used that thing forever because it seemed to always proc when it would be the most awesome time. Getting pvp chased for 2-3 min then having it proc and me getting away and knowing that the dude was completely pissed was so awesome.

Wrapped Entropy Spine. Not even a contest. Procced a blinding poison effect and procced pretty often. A++ for GM events. A+++ when grouping with anyone who had fear. Never could figure out exactly what triggered but but sometimes after a proc mobs would randomly say fuck this and book it as if they were feared. Stirred up so much shit with that weapon.

My personal favorites were my:

Sal`Varae's Robe of Darkness off of Vulak Aerr. Was fairly rare on my server as only a few dropped prior to the ring event being implemented.

EQ 1 Cleric Epic. Was decent quest, looked nice and had a great click. Never left my bags.

Nothing in any game since compares to EQ items. Some were basically game changers. One item could take you from obscurity to legend. Some were so OP that it was crazy.

They were also so epic because of what we had to do to get them. Remeber the 24+ hour sessions camping mobs?

Ghoulbane (EQ) - The quintessential weapon for a Paladin. I'm trying to think of another weapon that 'fit' a class as well (perhaps cleric epic?).

Forest Loop (EQ) - Back when Kunark first came out, these were hot ticket items. It be funny exp'ing in frontier mtns and someone get this to drop and you'd think they just won the lottery

Also, what was the name of the golden armor for Paladins. I believe the chestpiece was a rare drop off of Trak, but I can't remember the name (I owned one).

I agree that it's not the same with WoW. It's true that alot of stuff in EQ defined who you were. There isn't anything in WoW where you have to go to the ends of the earth to get stuff like you did in EQ and it will always be like that. No game now or in the future will have a userbase that will have the patience that you needed in EQ to get certain things.

I will never forget waiting in line for a Fabled FBSS. I think I logged in late one friday afternoon, and finally got the damn belt and collapsed in exhaustion early sunday morning. What made it worse was halfway through my friend called me and asked me to take over his character who was also in line. Problem was, he was on a different server. So I had to constantly alt-tab every 5 min for over 18 hours.

Fuck EQ in the ass.

Honorable Mentions: Amulet of Nec...and the manastone, just because it may be the biggest item in the game in terms of history.
Ancient fucking Guardians - ahahahaha

Gwan got so pissed at me when I sold some belt we got from plane of fear for about 100k plat, it wasn't even a guild raid fuck that bitch.

As, and is far as items go, I'll go ahead and say Elysian Tunic, I was so happy to be a druid in chain armor I didnt take my hot blood red armor with coal black pants off even when my guild went to the plane of time, I had great armor everywhere but the chest and legs.

Weapon - Hate to break the EQ cycle but in World of Warcraft - Crystal-heart Pulse Staff from Mag, basically my first real healing weapon because I killed maiden/prince over 9000 times and never saw either hammer drop. Looked so awesome and not that many people used the two hander over the kara one handers so it was unique looking until blizzard made the retarded PVP epic staff have practically the same model.
