Hey, we're allowed to take the piss out of the French - we've been doing it for centuries (unlike the Johnny-come-lately colonials).

shrug.

My main language is Spanish (I'm South American) and that didn't stop me from playing EQ/Daoc/WoW.

What I did find anoying was talking a few tidbits of Spanish in /say to my brother and having hordes of people saying 'English motherfucker do you speak it?'. If it ain't your language and you don't understand it, then just /ignore.

Yes I can tell you that with a straight face, there are no seperate communities within the british/danish/dutch/swedish players.

There are so many nationalities on english servers that choosing one country will limit you when recruiting in a big way so I don't think I've seen any serious raid guilds do this. I don't even think that english players are in the majority even.
Yeah occasionally you do see one recruiting, but there is nothing to stop you grouping with them. And really I don't think these kinds of single nationality guilds are ever sucessful.

The exception are servers where a large russian/spanish community gathered and they don't teach english as commonly there I guess. The spanish/russian servers mostly got rid of that.
But this just proves my point, people from countries that don't teach english as much chose a server, took it as their own and made their own guilds and community to eliminate language barriers.

The English/Danish/Dutch/Swedish/ect didn't bother rerolling and migrating to be with their countrymen because we can all understand each other and in most cases can't even tell who is from where until vent/TS comes into play.

So why have "European Servers" when the russians and spanish and so on will just gravtate to one server? May as well just have the "Spanish" label on it and cut out the hassle for new players. And Blizard agrees with me because they did it.

You may want to have a look at American vs Japanese players on FF11 to see what an international server will do.
I want to see every single trade/guild/party advert and every pvp tactic, no language barriers please.

And yeah the French are twats about their language, and it is my cultural right to insult them!

I haven't made a difference between successful raiding guilds and others, because it wasn't the point of the discussion. But there's plenty of swedish and/or danish guilds on every UK servers I played(3 different ones, all high or full pop). I'll give you that however, they're rarely successful.

I guess another issue from back in the old times is simply the number of people playing, and the fact you can actually fill a server with just one country worth of players, or more depending on the country. There's Czech servers, Greek servers and so on, they're labelled as UK, but 80% of the players there speak specific languages.

I'm just saddened they went that way however, because while some servers would simply be overloaded with french, germans or whatever else, you'd see some servers with a decent number of each actually playing together, in english. Instead, if a french guy or a german guy buys the game, he'll pretty much be funnelled automatically in a cultural ghetto with all the other retards of his country, instead of happily mixing with foreign retards.

The US vs JP issue on FFXI is a whole another problem. Japan, like all asian countries, don't even use the same writing system(you know, moonspeak wigglies). Cultural issues aside, that's a fucking big difference. The other difference is, they just gave the US players access to old japanese servers. It's not like the servers launched and japanese and US players had to play on them together. They launched servers, Japanese people played for almost 2years on them, then all of a sudden, a surge of retarded american newbies pop everywhere. Anyone would feel the same, especially with the cultural gap and the typing issue. You know, like how you couldn't even type in japanese on the US client because the guys at Square(or whatever it was) were fucking retards. It was bound to end in a big mess.

As for the french and the insults, I played for years with a "hardcore" pvp guild in UO, AC and a bit of wow early on, I don't think one day passed without someone mentionning I was french, smelly, liked frogs and would give up as soon as we engaged a fight. At the good days of playing with americans ^^. Don't misunderstand though, it was always fun having the who sucks most argument with our resident white hispano/black wannabe mage.

All that said, I'm gonna play on a UK server again for wotlk. Playing with the frenchies is fucking terrible, unless you're lucky to land in the very few elitists(understand non retarded) guilds. And most of them are actually playing wow for pvp more so than pve, it's easier finding a good pvp guild than a good raiding guild on the french realms. There's actually a pretty competitive battlegroup there which 2 "top" teams come out from(aAa and Millenium for people who follow arena tourneys stuff). But first french KJ kill was like 30th in europe or some shit.

I tell ya one thing, I would never, ever play on a Spanish (as in with people from Spain) server, nor with the Spanish localization of the game. The translation is awful, because it's made in Spanish from Spain (which is very different than Spanish from say South America).

Heck, I wouldn't even play on a server with high mexican pop. They butcher the spanish the language. Not saying my Spanish (Venezuelan) is the perfect one but the spanish in South America is quite different from the one in Central America and Spain.

We (The Axemen) are 100% Norwegian, and have averaged well within top 50 in Europe for 4 years running.

It's doable, but rare. Recruitment is a bitch.

God, french servers make want to pull my hairs out...The retardation there has no limit it seems.

Anyway, I remember the good old days of EQ, with international servers. The french were on Karana mostly, and a bit on Morrel Thule. It was a great time indeed. The french community was great then (well we didn't have the retards because, hey, english was too hard for them), and it was nice meeting people from everywhere around the globe.

Damn, I miss those days...

Another question:

Would the EU WotLK work solely as a software install? If I got the EU WotLK, installed it, and used a US Key to activate my account, should that work?

For about a week or so, about a month back the EU battlegroups were merged with german, french, spanish and russian. Communication was a nightmare - especially with the russians. There's a good reason they decided to segregate the servers and battlegroups, they even admitted that 6 or so "unofficial" spanish and russian realms were horrible for english speaking players to play on, and thus opened up free migration and eventually closed some of them.

I for one am grateful for getting all the russians (many of who simply refuse to, or can't, speak English) and spaniards off my servers. Anyway, "euro servers" were terrible in the beginning, you saw realm after realm succumb to one language group due to the largest fansites promoting a specific realm for their visitors to roll on (Russians conquered Warsong first), and this was even before transfers were possible.

Can't say I'm really surprised about some comments in this thread, but I thought I'd point out I'm French and have never used anything but English language in MMOs, since it's simply the most convenient. The only time I've ever spoken French is in /tells, and even then only when some people who had asked where I was from decided to tell me a few French words in whispers..

I understand where some of the retarded French hate is coming from, but saying that ALL french players are assholes about their language and speak it just to spite other players is rather silly. Personnally, I speak French in everyday life, but I use English for anything computer-related because it's more convenient, requires less words to express the same things, and all around sounds better (in my humble opinion).. So stick the generalizations up your ass.

EDIT : Another note to add, a few people in my office play WoW also, but they play on French realms. The translation is abominable (most words are translated literally without trying to keep the meaning or puns), and makes me want to throw dead kittens at babies. Seriously though, I can't believe somewhere in Blizzard Paris, some people are being paid to write such horrible bullshit. For Le Horde, indeed..

I don't miss French people at all. I mean, all the more power to them and our Frenchies at least tried to speak English...but man.
