is there a major selling point for this to be an mmo rather than a single player game with options for co-op?

One would hope that the monthly fee would go into progressing the story/events on a monthly cycle, since it's a "storytelling" game.

If AC1&2 can do it, no excuse for newer games not to give it a shot, especially when they're pimping their story as their main focus.

Yes, $15/month*user base. Pretty big selling point there, especially when the words "Star Wars" and "Bioware" are involved.

Eh, I just assumed that they buffed the demo characters, as showing themselves dying wouldn't really make a good little preview. They barely lost any health, if any, against the Jedi.

I actually laughed when the developer commented that it took team work to kill the Jedi because of how little damage he did to the demo characters.

so the recurring subscription fee is for financing the extensive and continuing storyline, which would not be possible on a normal game's budget. That's fine, I'd probably pay 15 a month to play mass effect if it meant constant story and content updates. But why market this game as an mmo? I've hardly seen any talk of features involving or taking advantage of a large population or community, which there undoubtedly will be in a star wars game(mmo?).

The thing is. If you are watching developer diaries..you know what a game is. And you most likely know what an MMO is. So therefore, when someone says I'm making an MMO, you don't ask what do you do, you ask "what's your catch, what's different".

So that's really what they are showing off. Not what do they do the same, but what makes them different.

They mentioned they'll have raiding and pvp, someone talked about armor sets. So I imagine they'd steal a lot from WoW in that regard. Hopefully not talk to mythic. So that's why they don't want to focus on that, because they know that just meeting blizzard's level of polish is already a huge task. Let alone a big difference.

Usually when an mmo tries to distinguish itself from others, it does so by emphasizing differences that atleast tangentially involve MMO elements. This one stuck out to me as avoiding or disregarding discussion of MMO elements significantly more than the rest.

I think unless they have gigantic continents with flight (soon everywhere with 4.0) and little use of instancing (rescrict to dungeons mostly) this will not be warcraft in space at all, it should be much closer to kotor/ME with coop. They are showing their guns (story+lightsabers.. the game should be awesome), but they will lack in a lot of other MMO-related areas we're used to I bet.

Day one game anyway, but the closest we should have of a SW meet WOW should be Starcraft the MMO...

Ok ok like in a year from now or more hehe...

But I don't think SWTOR will feature player flight at launch. The Bounty Hunter move ("death from above" the dev said I think) looks just like a special animation - but that's fine had no real flight from any Bioware games and I love them all, still it will be a selling point for WoW next year.

Does anyone else see this as a huge obstacle to this game's success. Several Bioware releases, most notably KOTOR, have been pretty buggy (at least for single player games). What happens when a company with a track record for developing buggy single player games decides to program in that most bug ridden of all mediums, the MMO?

You might be thinking of buggy as shit KOTOR 2, which Bioware had no hand in making. I don't remember anywhere near the bugs in the original game, or any other Bioware title for that matter.

Urine is relatively clean, tangy and salty...don't see why American hasn't already embraced it.

There was some complaints of bugs with ME. I didn't get a one personally though.
