F2P MMO's

Been looking for free to play casual MMO's lately while I wait for something that I really want to play. Two games have caught my attention. Chinese based Perfect World and Sword of the New World. Anyone tried these yet? I've heard they are decent for being free just curious to see if anyone has played before. I don't expect them to be on par with anything out, just looking for something to occupy my time.

Searched and didn't see a similar thread. Let me know if there is...

I played a Perfect World on a private server it was pretty funny. I liked the pet system(It's similar to WoW hunters and theres rare creatures on 12 hour spawns that you can tame) and it has a pretty good soundtrack. The grinding wasn't bad on the x12 rate private server, but I'd imagine its hell on the real server.

Sword of the New World is garbage though theres just bots everywhere since it basically has a gambit system like FF12. Everyone has 3 characters so theres just afk teams farming/autolooting in every zone.

SotnW was fun for a few hours until you learn how to set up your auto-farming team and then it just becomes ProgressQuest with a 3d UI. Don't bother. You're really not going to have much luck with F2P MMOs unless you're about 14 and have all day long to sit around on MapleStory or FLYFF or some shit like that.

I played Sword of the New World a bit. It's fun if you take it for what it is. The game doesn't play like most MMO's, personally I didn't like the controls. In the few dungeons I did I fought mass amounts of mobs, which was cool at first but I grew tired of it quickly.

Here's a huge list of F2P MMO's. Honestly, I haven't tried many on the list, but I do recognize a few of their names.

Free Realms and Stargate are going into beta soon. I've been hearing lots good things about FR.

Stargate has an interesting concept, every three months they'll raise the level cap two levels... Which is awesome assuming they keep up w/content.

Perfect World International

There is Perfect World international. It should be in open beta now. I played the closed beta MY-ENG version and it wasn't terrible, but like most F2P games it got grindy after a while. But it's really not all that bad.

Runes of Magic - Current news

Runes of Magic is another F2P title that just recently open their closed beta, and honestly, I am really excited about trying it out. It has two of my most wanted features when it comes to any MMO's, a dual class system and player housing. It's supposed to look a lot like WoW as well. I'm waiting on my editor to get me an account so that I can do a impressions on it for our site as well, but launch of CB didn't go that smoothly and they have been hectic.

I also am finishing up my impressions on La Tale, which plays a bit like Maple Story. It's a side scrolling casual MMO in the same vein, but it also has an ongoing story to move through. Personally i HATED Maple Story, but I have actually logged about 6 hours playing La Tale and there is something about it that is keeping me semi engaged.

Runes of Magic's website doesnt look like a complete copy of the usual Korean MMO Website, so i guess thats promising.

I'll reserve judgement until i see the UI and Font.

If you're not limited to conventional MMOs, I'd recommend Albatross 18, the American/International version of Pang-ya, a very popular Korean online golfing game (with a weird anime look). Pretty much everything you can buy at the game's store you can also earn, and there's not too big of a gap between someone who spends money on the game and someone who doesn't. The courses are pretty fun, I play it from time to time.

Albatross18 Season 3

Pay attention to the "tutorial" zone as it introduces some unique quest mechanics on Shards of Dalaya versus original EQ. Also keep the books you get when you start -- you'll need them for the main quest, which is a very rewarding quest chain that spans nearly the life of your character.

Other than that, check out the unofficial wiki for info on what's different (some of it is vastly different from EQ, like a lot of behind the scenes mechanics): Main Page - SoDWiki

They have a fairly major expansion coming up that's going to introduce a lot of content in the Kunark zones, so it's definitely worth checking out beforehand so you can potentially be close to its level range by the time it comes out.
