In our noob days when Faf/Nidhogg fights would take 1-2 hours, our old Linkshell fought him once and he used a knock-back ability that hasn't been in the game since Beta, followed by the mandatory spike flail from having hate spread throughout the room. Completely random shit can take you by suprise in that game. Even mob abilities that you KNOW are coming and can easily take care of, can still catch you off guard or have the chance to be catastrophic.

FFXI is also the only mmo I've seen where you can recover from a complete raid wipe right where you left off.... How many times have you been in old Wyrm fights where everyone gets flailed/overrun with adds and you end up holding it there while the entire alliance gets raised up and weakened? The fact that you can sleep giant dragons repeatedly always hurt me on the inside, but oh well.

Yea my LS was the first non JP LS to hold down our own on the three Kings. I can log in right now and they probably have some sort of presence on each. When I as a newb lvl 72 or 73 WHM on back up bitch duty I got pulled into the alliance to help cause someone had to log on Nidhogg.

I remember things going south and I just did elemental seal + sleep and I was like, holy fuck I just saved the raid. Everyone cheered me on and it was one of the more memorable times in my MMO career.

Definitely a close second to my two boxed druid kiting Karana and his gimp buddy while we were able to camp and save the raid during a Plane of Storms attempt in EQ1.

It hits the same emotional points.

technically the mentoring system has been in for a while, but it sucked.

You have to invite a person to the game and they stay for 40? days, then you both receive 2 special head peices

And when the high level uses his in party with the low level, he gets downleveled.

The sucky part was, you get no exp, and gear didnt scale, so yeah it sucked but it was a form of mentoring, just the high level didnt get any reward

But now that problem is over, well least ill have that hat for collection! lol

Vittra, Fafnir fights are down to 5-10minutes now lol. I remember the old days when vinen and I's linkshell bragged about our 26 minute fafnirs

I was in Vittra's linkshell and at that crazy Faf/Nid fight too. It was really fucked up, he just knocked back the entire alliance and then spike flailed us. One of the JP members I think told us it was a beta ability and we got hosed.

It was fun causing spike flails on LS's who blatantly used botting programs to win claims, ie 99% of the 3 King crowd.

Yeah I botted as well. Like I really care what people think now. I mean shit, if you didn't bot what was the point of even showing up to the camps? It's so taboo to mention botting in FFXI, but it was the only shot we even had to have a 1% chance to claim a king. It's sad how FFXI endgame was at that time.

And there's always going to be the people that deny their LS botted, or that they personally botted, but you could always tell who was doing it. It didn't take a genius to notice certain people making more claims than others and several people all casting at the same time.

I can honestly say I never botted! but that was more out of the fact I could never get the damn thing to work :\ did <3 my POS.exe and Fleetool.exe though :3

I was such a bad influence... I totally was the one who spread the stuff over the server lol. felt like such a crack dealer.

If I didn't have a fish bot I probably would have quit the game a few weeks into it. I had 6 Alts fishing carp 24/7 in that Knight lake by the Elvaan city and got a Lu Shangs in 2 weeks. Probably would have been less if I had manually made insect paste. Then I just setup an alt to fish black sole in Batalia Downs and viola, instant gil. Good times.

Thinking it's kinda funny how some people got banned. Iren and Blade because they were dumbasses and then there was Chewbar! who always claimed he never touched the tools (bullshit!)

When the cheat app list got leaked a while back 90% of my LS was on it, heh. I didn't use it but I definitely benefited from it. SE should have long ago done something about three kings claiming and doing something to encourage a better system and discourage bots.

Heh, Aikar and I were running around with them back before they'd had their interface translated to English... was rather interesting as at the time my knowledge of Japanese was near nill. I just remember everytime there was a patch I'd have to ask around friends I had trying to figure out the goddam memory offset.

Our LS was in the same situation, although considered a NA guild we also had a bunch of Koreans, folks from Singapore etc. Many of our NA members were of Chinese descent as well so most of them have JP clients as well. I was one of maybe 5? "Normal" NA players and I came late to the party.

Nowadays the LS is almost entirely normal NA players though.
