I remember being one of a handful of people in the office on Christmas Day 2001, sending out code for hotfix and having the operations manager call me from home and asking me if I was serious about doing a 7am hotfix on a major holiday over something like mages being able to get infinite pets.

Ahh, good times.

I wish one of these devs would just go balls out and just come clean about alot of these things. Hell I wish one of the original devs would write a book on it.

I imagine it's just not as cool as it sounds. Instead of some elaborate finish to these long quests they probably just didn't get around to finishing it at all.

edit - And for my stupid exploit, my guild raided with 30-40 instead of the cap so we did some stupid stuff on raids to make them work. Leashing was a really cool mechanic - except it was pointless on multi mob fights. Ikkinz 4 boss had multiple ass rape adds, so you put the healers outside of leash range and just let them get heal agro - adds ran out to kill them then leashed back in, repeat ad nauseum. Very tame and boring. I'm sure we did other stuff but I can't remember it now.

I have a screenshot floating around somewhere on my PC at home.
Here's how it went:

The Shissar Mage Staff from original Veeshan's Peak, mage only, would right click summon a lava ruby. The lava ruby was tradeable and had one charge of what was then the 2nd or 3rd highest rank of the mage DS.

Mage would buff warrior with the highest rank of the mage DS.

Bard would buff the warrior with the buff from the lava ruby.

Druid would buff warrior with highest level of damage shield. Normally it wouldn't stick due to the mage's highest level one being better, but it would overwrite the buff from the lava ruby. Now the warrior had both the mage and druid damage shields.

Then the bard would buff the warrior with another lava ruby. So now the warrior had the highest mage and druid DS, as well as the 2nd best mage DS.

This would be around 100 points of DS.

At this time bard songs would stack, so a bard in the warrior's group would twist 3 or 4 DS songs. This would get the warrior to nearly 200 points of DS.

In Velious straight melee, CH chain mobs like Tormax and Vindi would quad every 1.5 seconds or so. So the damage shield alone was a good 600 dps.

The Shissar Mage Staff was completely removed from the game because of this. It wasn't nerfed, every single one was deleted.

Myself and a few friends were playing on the test server for a while. One of my friends loved to spam in chat with all the languages he knows. He wasn't trying to level our skills, just annoy the fuck out of us by saying "Fuck You" in his 50 something languages all at once. I put his ass on ignore so he decides to spam emotes which at the time of the patch build would cause you to go LD. We found out that ignore was bugged in this patch so we sent out a petition to Blizzar... I mean EQ devs. The devs ignore the bugged and it went live anyway. The days that followed after the patch were my friends logging on trying to get on peoples ignore list only to follow them doing /fart emotes while they were fighting bosses. Get a entire raid to ignore you and do a /burp emote... 50 plus people just went LD.

Lol that made me totally remember when you gave someone permission for corpse drag early on you took such a huge risk. They could literally steal everything on you

Awesome thread. So basically the next big MMO has a stable interesting game, but is as buggy as shit when it comes to buffing, summoning, chat and trade (as long as it gets patched quickly after discovery)?
Someone should make a WoW version of this actually.

It was around 4 copper, not gold; each monk GM would basically pay for itself. The priest was removed almost two weeks after the Kunark's launch (at least, on my server) but most of the monks were green to me by then (58). There was at least one 50 monk GM (LuSun?) but he was assbeat; there was also the chance of getting worked over by Corp. Lancot when he roamed near. Anyways, I'm unaware of any wizards getting 58 by the 2nd day; I know that I was up there, thanks to this tactic/exploit/whatever, but that was at least a week after launch, if not almost two.

Edit: I could be completely ignorant of someone doing just that, of course

In no particular order, some may have been mentioned before, some aren't really "exploits", just... creative use of game mechanics perhaps...

- Give OT hammer (proced gate to overthere) to NPC; zone crash when it went off.
- Enchanters with proper faction and illusions = nonKOS to Cazic Thule in PoFear; give cazic paw stun whips to make it... interesting for the next group trying to kill him.
- BGF and elevation; target yourself with the frigid gnasher, shoot yourself wherever you were pointed. Also useful for mob positioning, as the movement matched the direction you faced when the effect went off.
- Pofear when it first opened; no level restriction. Had a level 3 ogre logged out in there for years until the inactive toon wipes.
- "Con" pulling. Considering a mob forced an aggro check but no "yell for help"; if a mobs aggro radius was > frenzy radius, you could split groups with any toon.
- Original pally "epic" sword; like 5 charges of CHeal. Worked from inventory. Must have farmed 50 or so of those...
- Earthshaker + riposte disc (warrior). AE pulls in ACaverns or Pofire, 200k+ dmg with one button click. EPIC text spam.
- DW Mossy twig/barbed leather whip + max haste + Mark of Karn = more healing than most healers could put out, with great aggro (mobs hated getting hit more, more than they hated getting hit hard).
- Recharging puppet strings, pumice stones, golem metal wands, and other consumables with vendor buy-backs.
- Fattys playing "doorway" by oops AFK at the cazic thule maze doorway.
- Bards charming Cazic thule when an xpac when live with higher level charm spell.
- Meleeing the crap out of hill giant legs when hiding in a hut, late beta/early live. Mobs also took falling damage back then, you could "bounce kite" almost anything with lev.
- Straife running for an extra speed boost.

Oh, and not an exploit, but the funniest thing I'd seen in the game, besides perhaps the kolani-fish-is-a-god-sometimes trick was probably the rumor "Mayor Grubbins drops jade reavers!". The assling faction devastation from that bit of deception was hilarious.

Not really an exploit. but i remember reading about a GM that summoned a bunch of people into VP and bound them there in the early kunark days, haha.

Man there are way too many to list.

I guess my very first exploit would have been in Akanon. There were a few camps of level 20-24 mechanics that dropped blacked pearls ($$), fine steel and low quality gems and had great exp. In all three camps there was an area you could go to right by the spawn that would cause them to run in circles as you casted your nukes to eventually kill them. I did this a lot on my first two casters just because it was easier than running in circles with snare and safer because of resists. Eventually I got my first warning!

Not really an exploit, but we used to go to the WFP arena and put money all over the ground and /shout Free plat in WFP arena. Everyone would come running and we'd corpse camp them all day long as they raced down to pick up the money, hesitating at first and hoping they could get some and out the gate before they died.

Camping the bard in WFP on your dark elf magician. You'd be KoS so it would attack right away. Back then pet could solo and would push it far enough away so you wouldn't die and then regen before respawn. Simply cast a pet, go to spawn point and go to sleep irl, wake up with levels. Same goes for necros and their FD/pets in Oasis.

Camping to get across zone lines was great, specially Siren's Grotto.

Charming Statue of Rallos to solo Vindi and then Statue was great. Same goes for mobs in West Wastes.

Climbing trees to get on buildings in WFP and kill guards.

Priest of Discord trick always fun. Charm a bat, send it on PoD, watch guards and PoD fight.

Ton of exploits in Sanctus Sseru that I'm 99% sure only a friend and I ever did or knew about with the arena and very high level mobs/mutant dudes. It was the best exp in existence at the time, period.

And the best of them all is transferring to Sullon Zek for the short 48 hour period that you could and a friend transferred an Agnostic level 60 mage. He could attack any side, good, neutral or evil, but nobody could attack him. He conned ally to all, and everyone else conned scowl. It was great griefing Hate in Sebilis and causing all sorts of trouble. You can't imagine the joy at owning the guild Hate over and over verbally and physically because they were just that big of cocky ass pricks.

Million more, but that's just a few.

Fun times!

Edit: Oh yeah and the time my friend and I laughed the most out of 6 or so years of Everquest was in Sleeper's Tomb. Ixtlan had beaten us to MoTG and thus the other Primal droppers at like 4am. I was pissed because we were there first, but my pussy ass guildmates in CoE didn't wake up or enough didn't show. So when Ixtlan started fighting MoTG I waited till he was 20% and snuck out from behind the little pillar at zone and I Highsunned him to spawn point and watched as he gained another 20% life. He'd kill one or two, they'd get him back down, and I'd do it again. I repeated the process until they wiped and I went on my merry way.

I honestly can say I feel seriously sorry for any class that was not a bard during the glory days of EQ. The list is absolutely endless of shit you could do, things you could exploit and the sheer power of the class. Nobody knew that a bard could gate shit and I did it all the time. At one point GM's were crawling Sebilis trying to figure out why all the golems and scarabs were gating. They too, were too stupid to know what the spell was in their chat log that said I kept casting. God I love Verant for putting Song of the Highsun in Katta so no bard ever bought it and I got to have endless entertainment.

I also remember doing the ogre wall in Emp Ssra doorway above the portal to block other guilds from killing him. We had half our guild sitting up there blocking the door so that our rival couldn't steal him since they were faggy euro's with the timezone advantage.
