Joker looks like someone stuck a vacuum in his ear and sucked out half of his insides.

I doubt any of these companies will ever get a superhero MMO right. Without the ability to create either a hero or a villain and be able to conflict directly with each other, it's another dry stale MMO with 50k subs.

i'd like to see a superhero MMO where your actions decide whether you're a hero or a villain instead of actually having to choose between the two. imagine a superhero game that played like GTA where anything goes. you could decide to go on a killing spree and suddenly you were now a villain. i don't know if this game is going to be like that or not, i haven't really read up that much on it, but it would be cool if something like that were possible.

Having a faction system seems like it would be easy enough. Infamy/Fame so to speak.

It would be cool considering many story arch's have our favorite heroes doing morally corrupt things out of anger or whatever for a time period before switching back over.

Sony MMO DC Universe Online first details - PS3 Fanboy

Quote:
The latest issue of Edge magazine has some details concerning DC Universe Online straight out of executive creative director Jim Lee's mouth. DC Universe Online, which will be released on the PS3 and PC, is a MMO that will include the cast of heroes and villains of the DC universe -- that's Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Darkseid, to name a few. Lee describes the genre as a "kick-ass hybrid between a traditional MMO and a first-person action console game" where you create a unique superhero or villain and choose his/her/its superpowers. Abilities named so far include attacking with fire or ice, acrobatics, flight, speed-running and teleportation. Unfortunately, you can't be the Flash or Poison Ivy or any of the famous (or infamous) DC characters for obvious reasons.

You then level up, improving your powers and learning new tricks; for example, flying becomes attacking while flying. Eventually you get to interact with famous DC characters, and Lee cites a mission/quest for a hero where you save Superman from Lex Luthor or, for a villain, attacking Metropolis and battling the Man of Steel. Gotham City is another place you can attack.

There is also less of an emphasis on instances and raids compared with other MMOs, and the focus will be on action rather than grinding. PvP details include arenas where you can use your superpowers against others and interact with multiple players: "someone might freeze your character in a block of ice, then pick up the block and chuck it at another player" and these arenas can also become "giant PvE boss battles." Lee also hinted at story events in DC Universe Online happening simultaneously with comic book DC Universe.

We are actually pretty stoked about this; with a well-known and well-established franchise behind this MMO, Sony might just have a fighting chance. We'll see how it is marketed and whether the gameplay elements live up to expectations when the game comes "next year."
Not expecting many great things...

One thing I can have hope for is the hinted-at storyline aspect. They might be using stuff like those shots in cutscenes and what have you. I am totally skeptical of everything coming out anymore, but if they can get some good story based questing type things into the game and maybe on a wild chance have decent dynamic events once in a while, it might be a bit more than a reskin.

I am as well but I will also pretty much buy any MMO that comes out. I think given the time and effort put into these games, vs other shit that gets pumped out, it's worth the 50$ to give them a try. I usually will have a couple weeks fun playing and exploring each one.

I want a dificile faction system, pretending to be a good super hero while at the same time planning and going for world control/ domination (this needs to be represented properly as game mechanic, watch pinky and the brain for more info).

There need to be things good guys have to do and things bad guys have to do and that has to create conflict. I wonder if this will be just another 08/15 2 sides (horde/ally) loot pinata with instanced pvp... yup

Maybe I am being pessimistic, but I can't help but think who is going to screw up a superhero MMO the worst. Will Cryptic (the guys that never added enough content or fixed the broken systems in CoH) mess up more with ChO, or will SOE (the company that hasn't had a hit since EQ1 and has screwed up EQ2, SWG, MxO and Vanguard)?

It would be nice to think that the bar for the superhero genre will be raised by either ChO or DcU, but I too am skeptical. I'd love to be proven wrong on this.

P.S.: And yes, those screenshots of the DC MMO do look like they suffer from Uncanny Valley.

To be fair, they didn't really screw up MxO and Vanguard, they bought them after they were already screwed up.

Is it just me or is the Joker a messed up Inny with Make-up?

I don't know why but those screens of the Joker made me think of something you would find in a Plane of Hate / Plane of Mischief combo.

Sure those games were screwed up when they bought them, but did SOE try to fix them? I rate MMO's in two phases (pre-launch and post-launch). To me, a fun MMO needs to have good content in pre-launch, but also ongoing content added as we go. I don't blame SOE for these MMO's pre-launch, but they did very little to fix these games.

It is just going to be another PoS game that SOE puts out. Save yourself 50$ and just take a shit on your computer desk. That is all this game is going to be.
