First Screenshots of the DC MMO

First DC Universe MMO Screens for PC and PS3

First DC Universe MMO Screens

A first glimpse at Sony Online's MMO for PC and PS3.
By Sam Kennedy, 07/04/2008

In case you missed it earlier this week, Sony Online updated its Myspace page with some new media for DC Universe Online -- including the first ever screens for the game. While they're small and don't show any gameplay, they do give you a sense of Jim Lee's visual approach for the PC and PS3 MMO.

Also on its Myspace page, SOE is inviting people to help virally market the game for a chance to attend its Comic-Con party in a few weeks. By making its page a top Myspace friend, people can win a shot at entry into the party. And speaking of Comic-Con, that's where the first public showing of the MMO will be, so make sure to stay tuned for that later this month.

In case you haven't heard of DC Universe Online yet, it's similar to City of Heroes in that you can create a superhero and select its superpowers. And while you can't play as any of the actual DC superheros, they will be featured throughout the game.

Hopefully the gameplay art will look like the screenies. It also looks like you can see Jim Lee's influence on the game art (which is great, he's one of my fave artists). We are supposedly getting more info at E3.

I really hope they are going to go the route of open power selection, ala Champions Online. And I hope that since Lee was a hardcore EQ1 raider, and that he's hinted there will be raids, that he holds to implementing raids in the game.

Something tells me this will be Vanguard 2.0. I'd like to see more information about The Agency, it's been in development forever.

Both the DC MMO and the Agency have been in development forever. I think that SOE realizes it can't afford too many more screwups like SWG, MxO or Vanguard. If what is said in the articles is true, they are going to take their time with projects from now on.

Personally, I think that if SOE screws up the DC IP, they should just shut down. Its like SOE is the place where big IP dies. How can you mess up an MMO that will have cities like Gotham City or Metropolis?

I hope that SOE pulls a rabbit out if its hat on this one and does well.

Here's to hoping they replicate the things that made CoH fun in the beginning, and then don't nerf the fuck out of everything in some shitty attempt to make everything balanced and comparable to regular mmo mechanics.

Knowing sony, my hopes are not high.

Everyone's a critic I know, but those shots look to... SOEish. They don't look so artistic as plastic. To me it looks like batman and joker if they were dropped into EQ2. I'd hope they animate well but... lets face it, sony doesn't have a terribly good track record when it comes to animations either.

Maybe I'm being overly negative, but when I think of comics, I think of dramatic poses and stark shading/lighting effects. Those SS's are more like "hi! I'm a 3d model of the joker!"

But all of that is moot as long as they can deliver a game that keeps your interest better than CoX. I aboslutely adore the super hero setting for an MMO, its so refreshing over elves and orcs. The problem though is CoX is like meeting a hot girl at a bar. The first night she's tons of fun and tells hilarious jokes. But after a few dates you realize all she wants to do is drink at the same bar and tell the same jokes. She gets old really fast.

I look forward to a video of a 72 man raid dying to The Batman, epic raid boss. Who will be the first to get the legendary Batman's Utility Belt!

If he's voiced by Mark Hammil, all is instantly forgiven.

Actually, they just got the DC MMO license in Mid 2005 in a deal with WBIE which included the purchase of Matrix Online. It has been almost exactly 3 years since that date. That's not an out of the ordinary period of time for MMO development. Not sure how long the Agency has been in development, but I think it's been about that much time, if not a bit shorter.

Those screenshots look awesome, though I wonder how good it will run on the PC version. Looks like I'll be playing it on the PS3 if I want to see visuals like that.
